I'm relatively new to the ar world. I have my lower ready to go all i need is to get an upper put together. that one seems to be perfect but is it overpriced or worth the money. what else are my options with a 1200 budget for an upper? i plan on long range/bench shooting.

how is that a "licensed grendel" with a les baer barrel? is that an old les baer barrel, back when he made "grendels." now, he has his grendel-copy...the .264 LBC.

For $1200, you can put together a very high-end upper yourself, starting with a high-end barrel/bolt combo. If you're only shooting from the bench, you can get at least a 22"-24" barrel, maybe longer. You can get a cut-rifled barrel/bolt combo for $529.

Cut Rifle barrel/bolt combo....................$529
Bolt carrier & parts................................$85
Increased mass upper............................$90
charge handle.................................$20-$45
Free-float handguard...........................$80-$200
Gas block...........................................$2 5-$80
Gas tube............................................$1 1

That puts you at $829-$1065. I would suggest the adjustable gas block, which will be more towards the $80, but you don't need some crazy rail-laced handguard meant for mounting 3 different SOPMOD accessories. Go with a basic free-float tube under $100. If you get a barrel heavier than a medium heavy contour, you'll want a beefier upper. DPMS makes a beefier low-pro upper for about $80. Your $1200 budget will give you cash to buy a decent one-piece scope base and maybe even a bipod on top of that.

I spoke to Les Baer at length and spoke to Bill. Les told me he has not changed his reamers and that the. technically speaking, 264 LBC chamber is the same as it has been since he started it. Instead of beating up the name, branding, and participating in name calling, we decided to continue using the barrels and continue using the 6.5 Grendel Name as we are licensed to use it. If I wanted to be in politics, I would be in Washington.

+1 on LRRP's info. Spend the money on a quality barrel/bolt combo and the rest will be fine. I have two of he dpms lo-pro uppers and love them. One on a 16 inch Liberty barrel and one on a CSS 22 inch. Both are sub-min guns.

Can you provide brands and websites as to where to acquire these products? I'm having a hard time finding all these prices to the parts you listed.

Or for about the same Money you can have us build it, test fire it, get a lifetime Warranty and all the technical support you need! Check out our website at www.precisionfirearms.com. We just started building rifles and uppers with Lilja Barrels and are also building on German made barrels finished out in-house. These are available as custom order and are in the 1100-1200 bracket. There is also a fluted option!

If you want the DPMS lo-pro upper with extra beef to it, you can order through Midway, Brownell's, or others. Same for economy handguards.

If you want the pleasure/pain of building yourself, be advised that you now become the quality-control department. There really is nobody else to blame. If you don't have time, or don't have the tools, a reputable manufacturer or custom shop is a great resource to have, and there are plenty. There are things that GA Precision has done for me that I would have never thought of, and I've been dealing with the innards of AR's since I was about 13. Some of the things competent and well-equipped shops can do for you is truing or blueprinting your upper, barrel extension, bolt face, etc., although that is rarely necessary with the AR15. It's still nice to have someone check out your specs in that regard for an accuracy stick.

Both options end-up being about the same price-wise, when all the tools and time invested are factored-in. If you're already well-versed in AR barrel work, trouble-shooting, gas system balancing, trigger work, and so forth, nobody's going to change your mind.
