Here is an interesting article that discusses assault rifle cartridge development history. It also talks about "ideal" bullet requirements for armor penetration as it varies with caliber - specifically it mentions the 6.5 Grendel and the 6.8 SPC in this area. (However, thier 6.8 SPC data is based on the higher pressure rounds no longer made by Remington)

The Grendel appears to fall in the required range of an "ideal" cartridge to penetrate armor out to a decent range.
