  • Range Report- 120 SMK and AA2520

Finally had a chance to load up some rounds and head out to the range. As most of you know I like 2520 powder, even though it can be temperature sensitive. I have been wanting to tweak my 120 SMK load and see what I can get out of it.

    Here are my results:
Rifle- Templar Consulting lower with AA 20" Hunter upper and WCI brake
    Temperature: 70 degrees
Winds- Started out light, but up to 8 mph and twitchy by the time I finished.

First up, 120 SMK with 30.2 grains 2520 loaded to COAL of 2.259".
After I made the first shot, I made an elevation change and fired next three. I like this load.

Next up, 120 SMK with 30.5 grains 2520 loaded to COAL of 2.259".
Wind was twitchy, but elevation held okay.

Next up, 120 SMK with 30.2 grains 2520 loaded to COAL of 2.235".
    This load really opened up.

And finally, 120 SMK with 30.2 grains 2520 loaded to 2.220".
    Not much better.

My rifle seems to like the bullets loaded just short of maximum mag length and 30.2 grains of 2520 seems to be the best powder load. I saved 2 rounds to set zero elevation with and they also were touching.

I have 123 SMK's and 123 AMAX along with 8208 XBR powder. I'll continue to test loads, but for now, I like this one.

Chronoed speed is average 2602 fps for the 30.2 at 2.259"

It's a shame those rack grade Shaw barrels just won't shoot! (unless you have the Shilen option)

No Shilen barrel here. Just stock.
