I am new too long range target shooting and just got a Bushnell elite with 80 moa adjustment. Before mounting it I counted all the clicks and centered it in middle of adjustment. (1st scope I ever did this to) I sighted it in (5.56 Ar15) at one hundred yards and found that it took 7 moa worth of clicks to get it on dead center at one hundred so I lost 28 clicks up for 100 yard sight in. Is this normal? I never tested this before. Are most scopes from factory set in middle of up and down adjustment? What's the most Moa you have ever lost in up adjustment at 100 yards? Curious because I have a bolt gun 7mm-08 I want to get a scope for long range shooting and I'm trying to decide how many moa adjustment I need without breaking the bank, so really interested in how many are typically lost zeroing at 100 yards, I want to have plenty after that. Thanks for reading.

This is where the MOA cant scope bases come into play. Your higher end scopes like NightForce, Vortex Razors, USO, Schmidt & Bender, Premier, Hensoldt, and others usually have 100 MOA or better, while your under $1k scopes have 80 MOA or less. Get a 20 MOA base and you'll be fine with the 7mm-08 out to 1000yds, using the VLD bullets.

Is it common to lose so much moa at just 100 yards? What's the most you ever noticed a scope using up to sight in at 100?

The Millet LRS 1 has 140 MOA of adjustment, and its priced at about $460.00. Its a great scope for the money!! It has a 35mm tube and comes with high mount rings. Midway has them for sale I believe, as does SWFA.

I have a millet LRS and it has been sent back twice in the last year. It has very poor repeatability. I would not buy another.

I'm really interested in how much MOA adjustment up from center of adjustment people have found it takes to get on at 100 yards. REally out of curiosity. However i realize most people probably do not turn their scopes all the way up and down to count the clicks and test the makers claims of adjustability are true and then zero the scope at the center of the click values before sighting in. If there are those who do this i am interested in what you have found. Also I am assuming a poorly made factory base or a less than perfectly alligned barrel could cause some variability on how many MOA your scope loses to sight in at 100. but really would like some input.

You are not really loosing anything, that's just where your point of aim and point of impact meet for those particular parts. It's different for every combination of rifle, rings/ mount and scope and there are many variables that determine zero. LRRPF52's advice is solid.

Those could be factors. Easiest solution would be a canted base, mount or adjustable rings IMO.
