View Thread : Possum Hollow Trimmer

I have Possum Hollow trimmers for 223, 22-250, and 308... I'd like to use one for Grendel brass. But I can't find one specific to Grendel on MidwayUSA. I've contacted PH directly, even placed an order but that never showed. Does anyone here know if one of the PH trimmers available online will work for the Grendel?

I remember reading a post last year where someone had one custom made by them.

Well since I only get voicemail when I call, and they dont return my calls, nor do they return my emails... I'm kinda stuck. Custom or not... I can't get any direct communication going with them. So I was hoping someone knew of a trimmer available online that will work. I saw a 6.5x284... is that close?

Do you actually haver any Grendel brass that needs trimmed? I have yet to trim any AA. I trimmed the fireformed brass I have just to get the neck even. If you need to trim because the brass is longer than max length, the lee trimmer works quite well it you use it in a drill press with a steel plate on the table to protect it.
Neither the Lee or the Possum Hollow trimmers will work if you are just looking to even up the neck on fireformed brass that is less than max length.

The Possum Hollow trimmer comes set to a specific depth, but there is a setscrew on the side that can be loosened allowing you to set your own cutting depth. Perfect to even up the fireformed brass. Unless I am missing something...

I just got an email from Eric @ Possum Hollow... my trimmer will ship today! Thank you PH.

I'm a big fan of PH trimmers. Easy, elegant, works.
I did a quick case prep video with one at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbmhiMYGu_o
I haven't had a custom one made yet for the Grendel, so I rely on a Wilson trimmer. I only trim once as part of case prep for new cases, so it is not a big deal.

I didn't realize that it was going to be a custom job. When I talked to him, it sounded like he was going to pop one in the mail. I'm looking forward to receiving it.

The way it's built, the cartridge supported is determined by a machined insert that matches the case diameter/taper at the body-shoulder junction and the shoulder angle. Assuming he is using CNC equipment and has cartridges on file, it should be easy to customize a trimmer. A friend had one bult for his magnum rifles that wasn't in stock at a distributor.

Eric @ Possum Hollow is a stand up guy! Great products!
I had him custom make me a Kwick Case Grendel trimmer a long time ago. I believe that i was the first one he made a Grendel trimmer for. He custom made me the Grendel trimmer & a 6.5x47 Lapua trimmer.
Yes, the set screw on the side can raise or lower the cutter to set your cut length. Just make sure you resize your brass before cutting since it spaces on the shoulder of the brass.

Nothing against PH, but I have AA brass with 8 reload cycles on them that still do not require trimming.
So, it begs the question, how many reloads until you are trimming?
If its more than 8 or 10, I would be inclinded to simply recycle the brass.
But, thats just me, and my experience may not be representative of others or those using alternative brass.

Even if the brass isn't over max length, is there no need to square the case mouth? I necked down some 7.62x39mm cases and the mouths seemed uneven to my naked eye. My goal is to touch up the mouths to ensure a square edge.

SGT. J:
A bunch of guys will do this with fireformed 7.62 X 39 brass. The Lapua / AA brass, Hornady, and Wolf doesn't really need it. Neither does the 7.62 X 39 brass for that matter but guys are comfortable going through that process.
When I fireform 7.62 X 39 brass I run an internal reamer through the neck to take out the donut that will form (and cause pressure problems). I use a Forster tool so it can be adjusted to both ream and trim to length / touch up the necks. Two birds so to speak but the internal reaming is ten times more important with fireformed 7.62 X 39 brass than truing the case mouth.

LR, what exactly is the Forster tool you refer to. I have been resizing and firing the x39 brass without reaming the donut. Don't want to hurt my G stick with overpressure. I love her so.

You can get internal neck reamers with them. I believe mine is .263". Shoot the brass but don't resize it. Run the internal neck reamer into the case while turning and you will hit a bit of resistance right at the intersection of the neck and shoulder. That is the donut being taken out.
I do it after fireforming but haven't had to do it again for the life of the brass.
No, your rifle won't blow up or anything but I believe it does enhance the life of the 7.62 X 39 brass dramatically. In addition, I believe it does improve consistency.
You don't really need to take out the donut unless your bullets are so long that the shank is pushed through the donut.
