View Thread : What muzzle brake for the Grendel?

melensdad
I've got a "Gill" muzzle brake on my 'fun gun' Grendel and normally I shoot that gun at my home range without anyone standing next to me . . . BUT I was recently at a public range where we had a group meeting and lots of different people trying out the Grendel for the first time.

As I was often behind the shooting line observing the shooting of my gun I was able to see the concussion blast from the Grendel's Gill Brake on all the various items there were on the shooting bench. Guess I never realized how much exhaust gas was directed back toward the sides of the gun by that brake. It was blowing empty shell cases and paper targets all over the place! And shooting under a wooden roof seemed to really amplify the noise too. . . when I shoot in the open at my home range I don't notice the noise (but my wife wonders if I have a cannon out back . . . I don't tell her about the tannerite)

While the Gill Brake is effective, I wonder if there is another effective brake out there that doesn't direct so much of the concussion blast from the muzzle back toward the shooting bench?

What have you had luck with  Provide links please :)

I know there are a couple of specialty brakes out there that do make the blast at little milder .... such as the WCI brake.

But, that's just what brakes do. That's what makes them really affective. I laugh when the person next to me jumps when I fire my AR. I hear them say what the hell was that. Then they settle down and forget all about it. It's a gun, it supposed to be loud. I think if your gill brake is doing what you say, you should just leave it alone. It's doing what it's supposed to do. Plus like you said, you don't normally shoot there.

The guys with the black powder shotguns at the range don't give anyone any warning before they touch them off. And they are louder and have more concussion than any brake i've heard ..... LOL. Plus, there is that enormous cloud of smoke afterwards. They don't appologize or try to change thier gun. That's just the way they work.

Forgive me if I sound preachy ..... that's not my intent. I just think that too many people have complained about muzzle brakes over the years and now the people that need them are sensitive about how they sound. I think the brake haters just need to grow up and leave you alone. Brakes aren't intended for the observer, they are intended for the shooter and seem to work just fine for the shooter.

Keep that gill brake on there and have fun (Unless you want to upgrade to a WCI).

Well the Gill Brake does work, and I really never thought much about other folks shooting near me until I saw the effects.

But I think you may be right, for 99% of my shooting the Gill Brake does the job without spewing dirt/dust/debris into the face of anyone so why change it out for just the 1% of the time when I may have it at a crowded public range? And it really only is an issue if the range is crowded.

So what you're saying is he should go with the Battle Comp, right? HAHAHA just kidding.

I gotta go with Mutt here, too. Either leave it alone or upgrade to the WCI. If you're really worried about the blast maybe go with a flash suppressor or even better just a suppressor ;)
