My First AR Build (But Not My Last!)

Here is my first attempt at an AR build. And it's a Grendel!

Aero Precision Upper & Lower (FED Cerakote)
Underground Tactical 18" Ultralight Contour Barrel (FDE Cerakote)
    Maxim Firearms BCG
Daniel Defense Clamp On Gas Block
Magpul Furniture (FDE) (still waiting on MI handguard - like watching grass grow)
    Geissele SSA-E Trigger Group
Precision Firearms LMD Brake (FDE Cerakote)
    Vortex Viper 1-4x24 PST Optics
    LaRue SPR-1.5 QD Scope Mount

Total Weight With Full 10 Round Mag = 8 lbs. 5 oz.

This gun was designed to be my walkabout gun for hogs. I already have a heavy weigh tack driver. It was a very economical build and I couldn't be happier with the results.

Check out my grouping at 100 yards WITH A 4X SCOPE!!! These 59 year old eyes can barely see the target in a 4x scope at 100 yards. The reticle dot almost completely covers the bullseye at that range.

Great first build. I really like what you put together.

Congrats! I'm running the same optics setup on a S&W MP 15-22 and have really enjoyed it. IIRC, the center dot is 1 moa so it does make bullseye shooting a bit of a challenge, but it should be great for hogs.

Very nice, I just finished a build very similar to yours. My goal was a light weight hunter, check out my "No. Seven" album, it's right at 7lbs without mag and I've got an Aero Lightweight scope mount on the way that should take off a couple more ounces.

Great looking rifle and I've got bad news for ya, you can't build just one. I have as much fun building as I do shooting.

That project was as much fun as I've had in years. A grown man's erector set. And the parts choices are limitless. I changed my design and sent a few parts back more than once. And the tons of input from postings from my brothers in arms at 65grendel.com was invaluable.

65Whelen I'm at 7 lbs 1oz without the optics and optics mount. I'll have to admit there was a time when I thought the build was too light. But it came together nicely there at the end and once I had the scope balance right (was too far back on the rail initially) the build switched from a toy to a (hog killin) tool!

Hogs hate Grendels. And for good reason. Grendels really do a number on them.

I was a little apprehensive of the underground tactical barrel. I have no history with polygonal rifled barrels. They said it didn't need break in but I did it anyway. First 2 patches had minor bluing from copper fouling, but that's the last I've seen of it. The rest appears to be powder cleaning. No further signs of copper.

                      I agree 100%, it's addicting.

Its easier to get away with if you have to build one for each family member
