    Sightmark Photon XT

I'm currently building a Grendel and thinking of optics. I have thought about the Sightmark but haven't seen much on it other than people looking through it in the backyard. Does anyone on here have any experience with it or other options. I'm looking to try to stay under $700.

I just checked and this scope is a digital night vision scope, sorry I can't help but maybe someone else will chime in.

Your options in this price range are really the Photon XT or ATN X-Sight, if you want day/night capability. The both are limited and both require IR illuminators to work at night. The XT is a bare bones b&w sort of deal that will never be more than that, but it is functional (I own one). The X-sight is plagued with problems, is on firmware upgrade bazillion and still does not work as designed, but it does work. If you are not planning on doing video and you want a scope that will work (based on what users have said), the X-sight may be the way to go. It's ability to record video and sound varies from firmware upgrade to upgrade. It does not do the GPS and other garbage that is claimed on the box. If you use the Bluetooth (assuming it still works) then it will eat batteries like french fries, etc. However, if you just use it as a scope, then you have nice daytime color capabilities, decent video at night, outstanding digital zoom, and if paired with a good illuminator, you are probably good to 200 yards.

The Photon XT might get you to 200 yards with a good illuminator (other than what is on it), but the image won't be as clear.

      Make sense?

Thanks DNS. I found that post to be incredibly helpful. A lot of us old guys have have long considered hunting with night vision gear, but have next to no experience using it. (I think I used a starlight scope some about 40 years ago.) I go to gunshows and the salesmen demonstrate it indoors in a well lit room. When I look online I see night vision advertised to do things that would be considered silly if put on a daylight hunting scope. It would be nice if you night hunters could share your thoughts with us about the equipment you use. Maybe do it in $500 increments.

Drift, I started a thread in the optics section to address your request. Hopefully, it will garner good results.
In another section, Drift requested night hunters post on their gear, suggesting that his experience with dealers, ads, and demonstrations has been less than enlightening. http://www.65grendel.com/forum/showthread.php?10040-Sightmark-Photon-XT So I thought I would start here with some overview thoughts and as time permits,
