    Deer Made A Mistake

Archery season opened up last month, and gun opened up on 17 October. I have not seen a deer on this property during shooting hours until yesterday morning. Eastern NC allows dogs to be used so I knew my chances of getting a deer were quickly fading. I decided at the last minute to hunt this field and I'm glad I did. I was in the stand shortly before sunrise and at 0658 a 6 pt buck came out of the woods. I watched him for a few minutes to see if he gave any indication that he was with a larger friend. He grazed in the cut field and started heading towards my direction. I had not cleaned up the area around this stand since I usually hunt my hang on stand which almost cost me some backstraps. Needless to say after the hunt, I cleaned up the areas around both of the ladder stands. My father in law will probably be happy I did that for him.
Grendel did work, and now has a coyote and deer under its belt for this years hunting season.

Gun pic was taken after the branch trimming.

Awesome. Congrats! What was the distance, and what load did you use?

it was just a chip shot, about 100 yards. I shoot Hornady 123 grain SST factory load.

After a few hundred deer shot with 120/123/140gr Amax at moderate speed I suspect internal damage will be something like this:

Congrats on the buck. We are still a couple weeks from opening of general season.

Roe, nice pic and that is the kind of damage I would expect with the Grendel, looks like what I have seen in hogs with it.

He jumped at the shot, went 15-20 ft to tree line and was dead less than 10 ft into the trees.
