New Projectile: Sierra 6.5mm 130 Tipped SMK

Couldn't sleep so was digging around the interwebs and I see Sierra has — finally! — put a tip on a new 6.5mm 130gr Matchking.

Not entirely diggin' its 0.518 BC, when their 123 SMK is advertised with a 0.510 BC and Litz independent testing upgrades it to 0.522.

    Berger's new AR hybrid 6.5mm 130gr has a BC of 0.560.

I don't think Sierra got my memo: When you finally put a tip on your 6.5mm SMK, redesign the ogive — like you did for your new tipped .30 cal. TMKs — to make the ogive state-of-the-art. Meh. . . .

Hopefully the tips won't melt at long range?

They might have under-advertised the BC like with the 123gr SMK, which is .522 G1/.260 G7.

The 123gr SMK is a great bullet in the 6.5 Grendel.

Unless you have a 28" barrel I doubt this will be a concern for Grendel shooters...

I'd sure be interested in these. I love the 69 gr STMKs in my .223.

Why not the shape of the 123 gr or 107 gr MK?

The 120 SMK is a very forgiving projectile because of its ogive, I also think the 120s ogive would lend to expansion at lower velocity better than the pointier 123/107 MK. I also think a tipped GK with an ogive equal to the 123/107 mk may end up too long for mag length in some chambers.

I like the idea as well, the 120 ogive is forgiving and accurate out of all the rifles I've tried it in. The 107 smk and 108 Lapua are more finicky, in my limited experience. I may chuck one up and cut it down to see where I can get with this. Will report back asap.

Here a quick rendition of what it may look like. Factory 120 SMK on left. image.jpgFinal weight was 107.8, I went too deep drilling out for tip. Tip is off a nosler .30 BT. Kinda digging it.
