Bullet weight and type for deer and hogs

    Dear brothers of the horde,

What would be a good round weight and type factory made for deer and hogs, Will be shooting from AA 20in upper with shelin bbl.

Thanks for all info and opinions on this subject.

I just shot a whitetail buck that was approx 150# that was bedded down and got a good exit wound. There is currently a post I believe in the hunting section about animals killed with what bullet. There are a lot of good options.

For a tipped bullet the 123gr amax and sst seem to be the sweet spot in terms of weight, velocity, penetration and expansion.

If you're using monometals lighter seems to be better - you need a higher impact speed to initiate expansion

I'm kinda in a transition. Two grendels will use 123sst this season. They have always been effective.

One Grendel will use 100 gr nosler bt reloads. If they work well, I'm sure I will switch them all once I am out of factory sst. However, if I catch another sale on sst at 18.95 per box I will probably just buy some more.

I have killed dozens of deer with 100 gr bullets from 25-06. Don't see why it won't work for me in Grendel.

I haven't had a chance to load and shoot any yet, but I intend to use 120grn Sierra Pro Hunters on deer. My hunting and shooting is limited to 300yds, so I try to avoid any pill with a Boat Tail. The exception being the Nosler BT and the old Accubond, which have a very short Boat Tail. In fact, the 120grn NBT has so far shot the smallest groups in my rifle, and will also be a candidate for deer hunting. The case capacity that a Boat Tail takes up is a sacrifice I am not compelled to make. My bolt rifle has a nice long throat, so I can seat a flat based pill .264 into the neck and not sacrifice any case capacity, or velocity. I like to put my shoots through the "boiler room", hitting the heart and both lungs, leaving a nickel size exit hole and good bleed out. The SPH and the NBT should fill that bill nicely.

          Good Luck... Good Shooting...Jim :-)

Brother with this setup you're going to have more than a couple dozens options. It'd help if you specified range and budget.

Out to 600 I'd check out the Precision Firearms 129gr ABLR load. The 120gr TSX is a great load, but 600 yards may be to far for it from the Grendel.

Yea thats where I was planing to buy my ammo from like that its loaded in house and the prices for a 50 round box is very good, what about the 130 VLD they have.

I don't know, I don't have any experience with the VLDs. The hybrid would be a better option for an AR factory load. It's suppose to be a hunting pill, but I haven't seen any reports on how it performs yet and to what velocity it performs.

I guess what I will do when I get my rifle put together is buy a 50 count box of all factory hunting loads and see out of them all witch one is the most accurate round. LOL then I can sell of the extra rounds amd use that cash to pimp out my boom stick lmao

I really like the performance of the Berger hunting bullets. I don't have any experience with them in the Grendel yet (plan to though), but we've had good results with 140 gr in 7mm-08 loads, probably moving around 2600-2700 fps. 130 grainers are deadly out of a 270 WSM.
