    Goats on the hill

I got home yesterday after a couple of days in the hills. As usual I started in the foothills and got a useful bag of rabbits with my 20 VarTarg then we headed up into the high country to hunt for goats but on the way I stalked a basin I had seen a couple of red deer hinds in last trip up there in may. They were still in the same gully system but were over 400yds away. The area is a largish valley with numerous little ridges and faces but travel is considerably hindered by the profusion of mataghouri (a bush that has inch to inch and half spikes and can be from 18in to over 6ft high so a path has to be planned to get around much of it as forcing through can be painfull to impossible in places. I could see the deer were feeding on the move toward what I expected to be a bedding up place as it was getting on toward 9am so was hurrying slowly but much of the time they were out of sight as I went through the couple of faces toward them, gaining nearly a 100yds each face but they were quite mobile and it seemed that as I got to where I could see them again they were just about past the edge of where I had got to and when I had got in to 170 yds and was getting into position for a shot they stepped into the bush and were gone. I waited for about 20 minutes but they had bedded down so I spent the time working out a route down to where that were if I got a decent shot and how the heck I was going to get the meat back out of the deep valley again. I know it will be a hard slog both getting in and getting out and at 63 am starting to feel that these type of hunts are getting a bit tough but I am going back there at the end of Jan so will get into shooting position earlier in the morning ( it is a good 21/2 hrs from home)
Anyway we (Lyne and Bruno - wife and dog) carried on to the first set of bluffs where we have often got goats over the years but there was nothing to be seen or heard although I did glass a mob of about 15 that were 800yds up into a basin that had a lot of mataghouri and would have made difficult climbing so we left them and carried on round to another basin I had hunted before. That was where the first real opportunity offered itself.
After we had got to the old stone hut and got unpacked I headed off for a look over the "easy face" so Lyne and Bruno came for a walk as well, although when I got to the steeper stuff they sat on a rock and waited. There was no sound of bleating which is often the first sign of the goats but in this instance two broke from behind some scrub so a quick spine shot dropped the nanny while the billy was toofast for a second shot although he did appear in a clearing about 150yds away but a lung shot didn't drop him within the clearing and he between the scrub and the bluffs he wasn't recoverable.
With the goat gutted and headed it was the start of a decent treck back to camp.

I had got the goat down in a steep little basin on the far side of the rocks at the end of the ridge behind Lyne.

Getting back to camp I set up the truck rack, legged the goat on the ground then hung it to finished the skinning. You can see the shot exit through the dorsal bone on the spine and the 123gn A max cost almost no meat on the onside and only a couple of inches of backstarp on this side.

I boned everything from the hams forward but kept them on the bone for a coupe of nice roasts and left the skin and remaining bone on the hill. Mush easier to dress out the animal when it is warm and it leaves much less to do when I get home.

With it being later in the day by now we sat in the sun and had a hot drink just relaxing for a while then the evening meal was a simple heat and eat I had prepared at home. Being the start of summer the sun didn't set till after 8.30 so it was a pleasent evening talking and reading.

The next morning I set out the other side of the hut into a very large basin that is also afflicted with mataghouri, making it important to stop and search out a way to where I wanted to get to as I had seen a lot of animals through the binoculars on previous trips but hadn't ever got onto it before.

There had been a hunting party in there the weekend before and the sheep had all been mustered off the week before that so the goats were quite flighty, and moved off at the very least suspicion of human encroachment. I did get one in a little clearing but again the scrub scuppered my attempts to get to it even after a big circuitous walk so I had to call it off.
I sat and enjoyed the scenery for a while and spotted a number of small mobs on the skyline and in a couple of clearing but they were from 700 to over 1500yds away and more effort to get to than my old legs were willing to think about.
I took a spread of pick looking down the Nevis river.

Across the face of the basin

Up the hill from where I was

And then across the rest of the basin looking up the Nevis river

After enjoying the scenery and the solitude for a while longer I made my way back down to the hut and got us packed up for the trip back home.

On the way down I got this one looking back down toward Cromwell and lake Dunstan over 3000ft below us.

Then when we got home I ran the boned out meat through the grinder and prepared some mint, sage, coriander and thyme with black pepper salt and sugar.

Getting it mixed into the ground meat so it can sit and marinate for a couple of days then it will become a really nicely salami smoked with pear wood.

Breathtaking scenery and interesting story as usual gruff. The salami sounds delicious!! Makes all the hunting I've ever done seem pretty mundane.

Nicely done, good to see some southern hunts . ( and you gave me heat on spine shots!!! Ha ha). Those goats look good- small deer idea.

It looks as though one needs to run marathons to be in shape for your style of hunting,. ? The scenery is awesome, you are in a paradise setting. Better than Aus.?

Good to see the lil guy- VG, is with you - helping I'm sure. I like your recipe upon the meat.

I'll arm wrestle Hanka - here, maybe a new spot for foods needs to be on here. Maybe you & I can run a spot. I just texted him- we'll see soon.

What's the temps in NZ , now at night, and day.

Coming into summer so we had about 22-25C during the day (mid 70's F) and down to about 6-8C during the night (40-45F)
A good recipe section may be just the thing for those who like to eat what they hunt and what they grow.
