What: Group Buy for Etymotic Research EB-15LE electronic, in the ear, ear protection.
Why: 1. You want to keep what little is left of your hearing. 2. Tired of sweaty ears and side of head from wearing electronic muffs. 3. Etymotic (true to the ear) Research is known very well in the music industry. The GSP-15/EB-15 LE are their initial products into the shooting sports. The only difference between the two models is the packaging. Since the company has virtually zero presence in the shooting sports the PRS team that I am a member of, JADE Precision, was tasked to demo the units at PRS events, SHOT Show, NRA Convention, etc. We also use social media, and military affiliations to get the word out on these units. JADE is made up of 2 Marines with sniper backgrounds and a soldier from the tank field. I can hear the jokes now, what does a soldier who was carried by his rifle know about precision rifle work that is performed by people who carry their rifles? He has the gift of gab, so we let him slide.
These ear pro come complete with a carrying case, ear pro with lanyard connecting them, a sleeve of size 10 hearing aid batteries, different sized fittings for your ear canal, filter removal tool, spare filters, and manual. They come with two user adjustable settings, 1. adaptive hearing protection with blast protection and 2. 5x hearing enhancement with blast protection. Mode 1 will seem like you are not wearing hearing protection at first. Since all sounds will remain true to the ear until you are exposed to sounds that are above 85 decibels, whether they are sustained such as engine noise, or sudden, like a gun shot. If sustained noise, the EB-15 will attenuate the sound, aka decrease the amplitude. A gun shot or blast noise will be instantly reduced to ear safe levels, but surrounding sounds will still be audible. Mode 2 is set by flipping switch on unit, and now ear safe sounds will be amplified up to 5x but you will still have instant reduction of loud sounds. Unlike most muffs, these units do not turn off and then turn back on right away to lower the blast levels.
If you own a set of muffs such as Howard Leight or Peltor you can test this. You need your AR, and you should have at least one since you are on the 6.5 Grendel forum, put them on and turn up the volume. Cycle your bolt by slingshotting or pressing the bolt catch to release the locked back bolt carrier. You will notice that your muffs will turn off and then turn back on. The closing of the bolt is an ear safe sound and there should be no reason for it to be reduced. You will know they turned off because the surrounding sounds in your house, such as tv will also go away. You will not have that issue with EB-15s. You will still be able to hear conversations, range commands, even that dude behind you who has the upset stomach. You also maintain excellent direction finding capability. The first time I tried these out was on a coyote hunt. I set them to 5x mode and within minutes I started hearing a noise behind me. At first I couldn't tell what it was, but I kept turning around and scanning. After a few minutes it sounded like something was about to pounce on me. I looked again and realized there was a sneaky copperhead working his way towards me and he was now 5-6 feet from me. At this point I had to unholster my Glock 23 and end his stalk. The amazing thing about this is that I was tracking him for minutes prior to him getting to me and he was traveling on pine needles. Most cases that is a stealthy approach. With EB-15s, not so much!
While demo'ing these ear pro the first thing most people do is clap their hands next to one of their ears to see if the sound is reduced like their muffs do. That works on what I like to call dumb technology, it does not work with these, since in most cases your clap is not loud enough. These ear pro are intelligent and will not be fooled by the clap. I assure you they are working correctly. Here are some short testimonials I've received from shooters who tried these out.
1. Shooter at PRS match with a fully custom $2100 set of electronic ear pro tried these out and immediately bought 2 pair. He said, I can't believe these work better than the ones I am using now.
2. Range master at same event had them in and asked me to put them in enhanced mode. After I did that the first words out of his mouth were, "What the f--- was that"? He was hearing birds in the trees, unseen vehicles driving around, bugs he hadn't heard in years. Then while talking to me in the lobby of the hotel, he said someone is talking about me and quickly walked away. He went to the restaurant and walked up to two employees and said you were just talking about me. They had a look of surprise on their face, and then he told them that he could hear their entire conversation from another part of the building. If you are worried about batteries, don't let that stop you from getting these. I buy a 60 pack of size 10 Duracell hearing aid batteries for $16-$17 shipped on Amazon. Even if I change out the batteries every 9 days, just for general purpose, I would have a 270 day battery supply. In case you are not familiar with hearing aid batteries, they are a zinc air battery. What this means is that once you remove the tabs that cover the hole required to introduce air into the battery, the battery is now slowly dying, whether they are powering the device or not. There is no on off switch for this reason. The only switch on the units are to select Mode 1 or Mode 2.
