    Bow Hunting

Could someone suggest a good Bow Hunting forum please. I don't want to find myself in an m4carbine type bow forum through a quick google search when there's a 65grendel type bow forum out there.

I'm looking to get into bow hunting this year. I took a Mathews 29" 70lb compound bow on trade a year or so ago, I want to put it use this year. I need to source broad heads very soon, as hunting season is sneaking up on me. I have very minimal experience with bows, so I'd like some experienced opinions.

Texasbowhunter is the one I was thinking also. Texashuntingforum.com has a not real active bowhunting forum but some very helpful folks post in it, and do not care if you are from Texas or Alabama.

What questions do you have. I bowhunt Texas and Mississippi. For broadheads your bow has enough poundage to handle any type broadhead you might want to use. I prefer fixed broadheads G5 Montechs, Slick Tricks or Muzzy Trocar. Had a Mechanical not open once and haven't used one since with a compound. Know it didn't open as I recovered the deer and the holes through the lungs didn't have the cuts from the blades.

For hunting in Mississippi I prefer to hunt from treestands usually a Summit Viper made for bow hunting.

If you want to discuss further on here we can if the Mods allow, or via PM. As soon as gun season opens though for me the bow is put up and the Grendel gets to play.

Thanks! I know how you taxans are about us outsiders, so I'll keep it quite. BAHAHAHA

Yea once gun season starts, the bow will go back into the closet. Unless I get some wild hair to check out some of the local public land that is bow only.

Right now I'm just trying to figure the methodology to sourcing the right broadhead for your bow, like we do bullets. If that actually exists. All I'm finding is I like this broadhead the best. :/

Archerytalkcom. Lancasterarchery.com and Slicktrick broadheads. That should get you going.

I just don't know if I can do that. After a decade of dominance, it's a reflex at this point. HAHA

So I've about narrowed it down to Muzzy 100gr or G5 Montec. Any experience?

The only hunting site I belong to is rokslide. (There is no c) It is geared toward western/backcountry hunting but you can get good tech and gear Info.

                    I use montecs, they're strong.

I have been using Montechs for 10 years and see no reason to change other than some broadheads leave a little more blood trail with the same shot but not much. The reason for that is Montecs are sharp to the very tip while ones like Slicktrick have a pointed end but that stretches the skin as it goes through and cuts a little larger hole for blood to come out of than the Montechs which slice through without stretching the skin. I have a Montec that has been used to kill 4 hogs and a rattle snake, it is beat up a little but sharpened for its next victim from a crossbow. I use the same heads on crossbow and compound. The traditional bows get Magnus heads on Easton Carbon traditional arrows.

As far as roll tide there might want to avoid it on Texasbowhunter but is ok on the Texashuntingforum where one member uses roll tide as his login name.

For finding places to hunt think edges/food source/funnels. On fields deer move a lot on the edges and will stage in cover 10 to 100 yards in cover along food source fields like soy beans if you have them or grain fields. If there are white oaks with acorns hunt there and creek crossings have been very good to me for bow hunting, and rifle hunting in big woods areas.

The Muzzy blades are real thin, damage pretty easily. Non-solid design (assembly required) The G5's can be sharpened. (Solid design).
I used to use Muzzys until I found SlickTricks. If I didn't use ST's I would use the G5's.

                          Definitely archerytalk.

I've tried a pile of broadheads. Started with monster Bear broadheads in the late 80's, then went Muzzy then SlickTricks and G5's. Hated they early (non) expandables.

A friend convinced me to try Rage Hypodermics. They flew really, really well from my setup (Mathews Switchback LD, 32" GT XT and ProHunters). The blood trails were RIDICULOUS. I like my shots inside 10 yards but I've taken these out to 35 with total pass through and 8' wide blood trails.

Best broad heads come from Trophy Taker. Their A-Tac head is very badass but very expensive. I use their Shuttle-T and Ulmer Edge heads. 125 gr

I've had good luck with NAP thunderheads, spitfires, schwackers, and G5 which I am currently using.
