    First Grendel Kill

I shot my first hog Saturday morning in central Texas. Hunting a feeder at 60 yards they came in just after daylight and I picked out a nice one and shot it with my new Howa HB 65G using Hornady 123 SST. Aimed for the ear and dropped him in his tracks. Can't wait to throw a ham on the smoker!! Unfortinately I missed another just like him that evening, I have a terrible flinch that I am trying to eliminate with the Grendel, I can control it at the range or hunting when I remind myself to breath right and pull the trigger slowly but it still needs work. That just means more pig hunting for physical therapy to recover from a .30-06 with a terrible trigger. Go Grendel

I developed a flinch several years back after owning a Barrett .50. It was all anticipation of muzzle blast/concussion. It took a while but I finally got myself out of it. Ear pro is a must at all times, range or field. I shoot so much now in off season it's become second nature again on breathing, sight picture and trigger squeeze. Good luck and congrats on pig kill

Wimp! Man, I shoot those things one-handed holding them at an angle, gangsta-style.

      TG, congrats!

Congrats, neighbor! I suspect we have all had our bout with flinch but it can pass.

Thanks Guys. Just_John do you have any recommendations for shooting ranges north of Dallas? I have hit Elm Fork and Garland, both are fine but still looking for better options, I would rather drive north than south anyway.

The last time I was out at Choctaw, they had closed the rifle range and were only doing sporting clays. Great restaurant.

Troutguide, I appreciate your transparency about working through the flinches. Honesty is always refreshing. I really just thought everyone on the internet shot sub 1/2 moa groups...

Great kill and a great rifle! I have the same one in a Boyd's stock. I'm really loving it.

There is a new range just west of Leonard, and one in Honey Grove. I think the Honey Grove range goes out to 1000 yards.

I shoot on my place - 100yds, and we have two more private ranges that go out to 1000 yds where we shoot the 50 BMG.

I developed a flinch from shooting a Browning 300 win mag after shooting a 30/06 for about 15 years. As part of my mental process while shooting, I concentrate on target acquisiiton and really do not want to concentrate on the trigger break. Keeping the target aquired involves mentally saying to myself do not flinch, do not anticipate the recoil.

Interesting enough, the 50 BMG does not bother me at all in terms of recoil, but the muzzle blast limits me to less than 25 rounds per day.

DNS, thanks for trying but that range is in South Carolina not Texas.

Rebels010, I dont figure it will help me get better to lie about my abilities. I have shot MOA groups with me new Grendel but that is off bags on the bench and much mental focus, I need to transfer that focus to hunting where the nerves get to me. Thats why I found the Grendel in the first place I knew I needed something with less recoil if I was ever going to improve. Did you shoot your Mini in the original stock and if so did accuracy improve when you switched?

Texas, I tried googling the ranges around Leonard and all seemed to be pistol only do you have a link or more info?

I purchased the action from Brownells and bought a stock from boyds. Based on other reports, I'm getting about the same accuracy as factory stocks. I'm shooting right at or just under an inch with factory Hornady ammo. I have some old black hills gold ammo but that stuff does around 1.5. I've been very pleased with the rifle and I'm looking forward to stretching it out further. I also need to get it threaded for my can, but the guy quoted me 8 weeks. I didn't want to be without the rifle for that long.

To build muscle memory, we shoot a lot of 22LR semi-autos with a scope shooting 3 of the 6 objects at different distances and angles that are called out at random by your partner. Spinner at 20yrds@340*, tin can at 20yrds@0*, water bottle 30yrds@20*, shoe box 40yrds@340*, empty milk jug 50yrds@20* and a orange polymer target ball at 60yrds@0*. Sometimes you may call the same object twice as one of the 3 shots. The call might be: ball, spinner, bottle.
It will probably work out your flinching issue and get you acquiring targets faster with better accuracy. To test your flinching issue have your partner load your centerfire rifle behind you (barrel up and safety on) with a live or spent round and then hand you the rifle for the shot. I've never had a flinching issue because of this training.
MSA Electronic Ear Muffs might help also. Mine sound cancel with a clap of your hands or greater sound, but you can still hear normally.
Life is fun when your ammo budget is more than your house payment.

Troutguide, I just now noticed that you are in Frisco. Maybe we will need to hook up and get you on some of the private ranges here an hour north of you

We might even coax 00spy over at the same time
