    Called Coyote and Swamp Hog

Well, calving season has started and the landowner asked that I keep an eye out for coyotes, not that coyotes are ever off the radar. I know there seems to be some mixed opinions on how much of a threat coyotes are to cattle. I spoke at some length about this with the landowner and he said for 10 months out of the year, they really aren't a threat, but during calving, they are and that is when he usually sees them in daylight, mixed with the cattle and going after his calves. So I started out the evening calling coyotes. Well after not being successful of getting a coyote in close, I tried to call in hogs and that is when I managed to bring in a coyote close enough to shoot.

I tried calling hogs for a while later and decided my spot was probably soured for a while so I went down and checked the lake to see if the hogs might be down at the water. They weren't, exactly, but were in the stinky, muddy, swamp end of the lake...

So it was a good night...except for getting eaten alive by the bugs down in the swamp. It is only March and winter is already a distant memory.

Yeah, and I was not wearing any spray or anything else and when I got down into the basin and out of the wind, the bugs were thick!

DNS - the news last week said that winter was cancelled this year, thought that you heard that. So, the bugs are rejoicing and calling in all their kinfolks. Probably also gonna be a short spring and then a really long summer.
Really enjoy your video's, look for 'em most every morning. Great way to start a day!

Have you tried one of those Thermacell deals for mosquitoes when hunting hogs here'bouts in NTX? A buddy of mine swears by his, but he lives in Florida. Says it does not impede his game-getting after I asked about the possibility of any odor giving him away.

Thermacell? Sure. I have a couple of them. Your have to have it with you got it to work, but they are pretty worthless when things are windy. In a box or tent blind, they ate great. On a calm day, they are great.
