    Failure to feed!!

I am have terrible feeding issues! I have a AR Stoner 18" fluted barrel, matching bolt and ASA Side charging upper. The gun shoots really well and is very accurate but it fails to feed on every other round. The bolt WILL lock back after the last round. I was thinking it was a gas issue but now think it is a magazine issue. I am using a C Defense and a ASC ten round mags. It seems to just catch the round on the right of the mag but then "ride" over top of it causing it not to feed and beat the hell out of the brass on the shoulder! Any ideas??

make sure the feed lip on that side isn't bent down. Not likely with two different mags but also not unheard of. I had to tweak the first two ten rounders I got from midway to orient the nose up.

What ammo are you using David? Some times on new magazines the upward pressure on the bottom of the bolt carrier adds enough drag it can cause feeding problems. I like to load new magazines and let them set for at least a week. This seems to let the magazine springs take set. I have also found a sticky substance on the inside of ASC mags. I found on ASC mags cleaning the inside of the body and spring improved function.

I use a lot of lube on new bolts and bolt carriers on new rifles. Inconsistent or unproven hand loads may also lead to malfunctions on new builds. Hornady factory 6.5 Grendel ammo has proven very reliable in my rifles.

What buffer and spring are you using on your new rifle? Are you using a fixed or adjustable gas block?

Usually when I hear that someone is having a FTFeed every other round, it is one of 2 things:

Like ricsmall said, a bent feed lip, common on some of the older CP and AR-Stoner mags.

The other is an ejector that is too long, with a sharp-edged face.

Every round that feeds from the right will get hung up on that side of the ejector, with the rim impinged against it, causing FTFeed.

AA shortened the ejectors to alleviate this problem.

You can also chamfer the edge of the ejector. I do this as a standard procedure when doing a build, in addition to a laundry list of other things so it can never be a problem.
