Gotta love it when you go out for a night hunt and end up killing a hog before sundown. I had been on property for well over an hour, scouting out different locations and trying to anticipate where I might see hogs. I picked a great spot, except for the fact that the hogs appeared in the opposite direction than what I expected.
I let the first hog come out of the woods in hopes of having both hogs out in the open for shooting. I shot the 2nd hog as it came out and then just barely missed the first hog before he reached the safety of cattle.
I was surprised the 123 gr. factory Hornady SST did not overpenetrate and completely exit on the opposite side. My guess is that part of the reason that it did not is that it hit a total of three ribs, on scapula and one of the centra (main body) of the spine, carving a groove through the centrum. I would also guess that it was the impact on the spine that resulted in the hog dropping in her tracks.
