6.5 Grendel, Best Value with Top Notch Preformance in 20"+ Barrel?

The folks over at AR15.com suggested I post this question here. So I signed up and started reading past posts before posting here.

I have a beefcake (heavy) of an AR I'd like to breath new life into with a caliber change. It's dedicated as a bench rifle, and I'm extremely excited to get into 6.5 Grendel. I was wondering is there a general agreement on the best value in 6.5 Grendel barrels right now in a 20inch plus length? My preferred barrel length would be 22", but I could manage to find much in this length? I do shoot suppressed, and I'm mainly interested in setting this up for taking those long shots accurately... for instance, prairie dog hunting.
Any help would be VERY appreciated!

PF will have several opitions for you to drool over in that length.

What is your price range for the barrel and matched bolt?

Also take a look at JP they offer two barrel options, 18 and 22.

I run the 18 and it is super accurate for my hunting needs, there is a member here who shoots the 22 inch JP barrel and he took it to a mile on a milk jug.

The grendel and its wildcat cousins are the best you are going to get out of an AR15 platform. From the hot rod 6mm long range target cartridges, to the grendel itself as a very versatile hunting/target round, to the most accurate 30 cal 100 yd bench rest cartrige. That 6.5 grendel brass has many homes

Check out this wildcat upper for long range accuracy.

My vote goes to PF. If we're talking about heavy guns might I suggest one of these... .920 profile Bartlein 22" Mark does great work and this thing can far and away out shoot me. Well worth the wait. That said my next build is going to be much lighter, leaning towards the Faxon group buy.

A Criterion barrel from PF is going to give you great performance for the price and you can pick your length and profile. However, you will have to wait a significant amount of time for it. When it comes to the Grendel there are quite a few barrel companies building nice barrels but what really separates your selection is your ability to wait for the barrel. Most of the top notch companies have some sort of a lead time. I waited 4 months for my Criterion barrel and around 2 1/2 months for my AA barrel. If you want something that shoots pretty well that is usually available right away BHW barrels from Surplus arms are usually in stock and are usually sub MOA barrels with the right load. I also own a 20" stainless barrel that I bought from ar15part.com that shoots boxed ELD ammo right at MOA every pull of the trigger and it was in stock ready to ship.

Odin Works has an 18" and 20" kit (Barrel, bolt, gas block) for under $400 if you look around.

I had a Shilen 20" great shooter. I bought a PF upper with a 20 Lilja heavy barrel. Again, great shooter. I think the Shilen was fussier with loads.
I also have a Faxon 16" that is shooting under MOA without load development.

The two I would like to try (bucket list) Bartlein and JP.

Just be aware they are .264 LBC chambered tubes, headspaced for the .125" bolt face. Other than that, BHW makes a good product. (I know firsthand.)
If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

no one suggested a Tbox? I hope they're ok. I've got a 20" on order.

If you are wanting to re-barrel what you have (rifle sized AR) with minimal impact, look at SATERN Barrels online store. They have finished, 24" 6.5 Grendel stainless, with 5R rifling and matched new Grendel bolt. All this retrofits into "rifle sized ARs including the varminters, etc. My only complaint, see my recent thread here, I wanted a 11 degree dished target crown. All theirs and a find most others come with a 5/8 x 24 threaded muzzle for flash hiders, muzzle brakes, can adaptors, etc. You may need to go to Grendel magazines which are available from Alexander Arms online to get one or two of the steel AR lower compatible magazines.
