Spinta Precision 20 inch barrel. Good Day at the range.

    Folks,

Did a simple build, 20 inch Spinta Precision barrel 1:9 twist. Type I chamber, a standard 7.62x39 bolt. The upper was a Anderson standard stripped, no forward assist, or dust cover.
Joe Bob outfitters adjustable gas block, rifle length stainless gas tube. 12 inch hand guard key mod. No muzzle device.
The load I used was 6.5 Lapua brass virgin, small rifle primer #41. 28.5 of CFE 223 which gave 2490fps. Topped with 95gr Lehigh Defense Controlled Chaos.
Accuracy was excellent, and was able to hit the gongs/swingers out to 500. I forgot how great this little round is.
Deer knock down out to 300, and coyote killing capabilities out to 500. Recoil is minimal. One of the reasons I left the Grendel was brass. When PPU got out of the brass for the Grendel, I was not happy. But now that Lapua/Hornady make it, I see a bright future. A2

I think you are underestimating the Grendels capability.

He's saying you can kill a deer way past 300 yards and a coyote further then 500 yards.

          Yep.

Not that I've had a chance to do it myself but if the right opportunity presented its self I would shoot a whitetail at 500 and a coyote as far as I could see him

I recently bumped a thread Adam Lilja posted about a Midwestern whitetail he killed at just over 500. It was very effective.

Lapua was the first company to make brass, followed by PPU, then Hornady, then Norma, Nosler, and now Federal.

"Now that Lapua and Hornady make it" is not computing to me. They've been making 6.5 Grendel brass and or ammo for many years, 2003 for Lapua brass, 2009 for Hornady ammo, both working in close conjunction with Bill A. on the products.

              LRRP,

I have not been in the Grendel scene for awhile. I have forgotten that Lapua was the 1st manufacturer. I bought the PPU, because it was the most affordable brass. Until it was recalled.

2490fps for a bullet that light is pretty slow, right? My book has H335 and 8208 both going 2840+ on the max load for 95gr V-Max. Even the minimum load is faster at around 2550fps.

I know copper is lighter than lead and therefore a 95gr copper bullet is much larger than a 95gr lead one thus taking up case capacity; do they limit your powder max by that much?

Edit: just did some research and I see that they are actually solid brass, not copper. So yeah I can see where a 95gr solid brass bullet would take up a lot more case capacity. Interesting...

                  Chris,

Starting off slow and easy. The 2490fps is from 28.5 CFE 223, going to build up to 29.5gr to 30gr. A2

28.3gr of CFE even under a 123gr is a really low start load, but is about 10% of max, so if you were generating a long trend pattern from that start point, it might be helpful for you under a 123gr.

Under a 95gr Lehigh, the published Start Load in Volume II (2nd Printing) is 33.0gr of CFE223. Max is 34.8gr in a SAAMI chamber, which will do 2790fps from an 18" even at 50,000psi.

                    Crank that bad boy up.
