    Build suggestions

I bought a complete upper with 18" barrel from Grendel Hunter and am planning on going with an Anderson lower and POF trigger. Any suggestions for a buffer, compensator/muzzle brake, and quality magazines? As for ammo, are there any issues running steel cases? Recommendations for ammo suppliers? Thanks for the feedback!

Your buffer tube determines buffer, rifle tube rifle spring/buffer, carbine buffer tube, carbine spring and buffer. I have used standard carbine buffers with my 16" & 20" 6.5 Grendel AR-15's but H2 buffers and JP silent capture spring are very popular.

I personally don't like the blast from muzzle brakes and use mostly A-2 flash hiders and one Phantom FH on one 16" 6.5 Grendel. Others will chime in as many forum members have tried numerous muzzle brakes.

As far as magazines all three major suppliers tend get reports of bad examples. I haven't used any of the C Products Defense mags but I have original C Products, ASC and E-Lander. The E-Lander mags seem to be higher quality but all my mags function although I had to tweak the feed lips on one ASC 24 round mag.

As far as ammo, I've ordered ammo from Target Sports USA and Brownell's but Selway Armory and SG ammo get good reviews. Many forum members use ammoseek.com to find deals.

      Welcome, friend!!
Those uppers look pretty slick. I've had great luck with the u.s made c products defense mags, and the e-landers are g2g. Ammoseek.com is a great way to get the best deals on just about ever cartridge commercialy available.

I don't have any experience with steel ammo for the grendel, yet.

Embarrassing as it is, I've never messed with different buffer weights and springs. The standard carbine buffers kits have worked flawlessly in my previous RLGS, and the tunable gas black that game with my Odin Works 16" ultralight allows me to fine tune my gas for any specific load, so I never found the need to mess around. Lots of much more knowledgeable members here that can advice on that subject.

Which POF trigger? I have two of the 4.5 lb dropins. The one I had in my Grendel was a little too heavy for it. Groups defiantly tightened up when I went to a Geissele SSA-E. The trigger even came out of my P308 for the same swap. Not critiquing - just think you will later want something a little lighter/crisper. Luckily for me, my POF triggers are put to good use elsewhere.

There are 2 things you can be fairly certain of: 1) the sun will rise tomorrow morning, and 2) Geissele triggers will be 25% off during Primary Arm's Memorial Day sale
        Let's go Brandon!

Thanks for the info StoneHendge. Both of the POF triggers I am looking at are 4.5 lb. I may wait now to check out Primary's sale. Memorial Day isn't that far off and I still need to buy mags and ammo anyway.

Kilco, thanks for the welcome. I wasn't quite sure what to expect but from the posts I read before registering, everyone here seems genuine and professional. I did a search and saw the C Products and ASC's but missed the E-Landers. I'll check them out as well as ammoseek.

Vascar, thanks for the response. I'll definitely need to read up on buffers and muzzle brakes/compensators. So far, you all seem to agree on ammo suppliers and mags so I'm off to a good start.

FD, I haven't seen anyone address the steel case ammo yet, so I'll give it a try. Chambers with a 0.300" neck diameter should digest the steel case without problem. I've heard (sourced to Bill Alexander) that the bimetal jacketed projectiles give better accuracy from conventional rifling, rather than from something like 5R or polygonal rifling. The stuff shoots surprisingly well through my 16" AA barrel. I fired a 5 round group on a target early on and got 1.25". Don't plan on shooting groups again, because I don't want to lose that.

Sounds advice. I LOVE the SSA-E in my Grendel. It's one of the most consistant, clean triggers I own, bolt guns included! I wasn't aware of the memorial day sale, I'll probably grab another one. Thanks Stonehedge!

LOl - I have four SSA-Es and haven't paid full price for one of them. I think we're in a holiday slump - hasn't been one since Easter. But for at least the past year, it seems that anything resembling a holiday results in a Geissele sale at Primary and Brownells

Thank you all for answering my questions and for the advice. I will hold off on the trigger until I see the Memorial Day sales at PA.

Grendel hunter specs Satern Liberty barrels which spec .300 chambers and I would expect them to be fine with steel case ammo. Like Drillboss said .300 chambers are G2G. That is my $0.02, I have never owned one of GH's uppers and have yet to shoot my Satern barrel.

I have not heard a single negative thing about any of the Geissele products. That being said I wouldn't admit it after paying for them. I do not think they are for every body. I think they pride themselves in providing a trigger that is incredibly fine and safe and with all the certifications that back that up come at a cost. I saw a sale this month for their SSA trigger at PA that came with a stripped PSA lower and PSA upper for $240. It was tempting. I am new to ARs so I'm going to develop a baseline with my pseudo-milspec trigger I got in a LPK from Karri's guns, http://karrisguns.com/enhanced-comba...rol-group.aspx, 33MS and a $7 reduced spring pack from Wolff. I am also considering the La Rue MBT-2S and JARD adjustable trigger for the price. I've seen the MBT go for $99 and it usually goes for $129 if you wait. JARD is ~$140 and probably too adjustable for most people to enjoy it. A large majority of trigger reviews are incredibly subjective. I'm using gun.deals alerts for notifications on price changes on ammo and sales and have had good results with wikiarms for ammo deals too.

I've heard some people having issues with magazines except for the E-lander mags.

Saw someone suggest a JP captured spring doohicky. They have a competitor for half the price. http://armaspec.com/product/stealth-recoil-spring/ I do not know if this works with rifle length receiver extensions like the JP SCS.

                          What about your optics?
