    pass thrus

I'm looking at converting my AR to my go to gun for deer and have my eye on the grindel its a impressive little round. So I guess I'm trying to be talked in to the investment. Its just when I look the round in person its so dam small! Is this merical pill really that Good to cover my Needs? Are you guys getting consistently pass thrus on hogs and deer with the grindel? I'm used to DOA (dead on arrival) with my other bolt guns.

    thanks

I have killed three deer with 3 different bullets, all pass through.
1 100gr barnes ttsx 140yds spine/neck shot, completely blew out spine deer dropped in its tracks.
2 105gr interbond by sneakyone, 75yds hit just behind ribcage, (bad shot my part) pass through, deer went at 100 yds and dropped
3 123gr amax 50yds complete pass through the vitals deer went less than 20yds, good blood

I've killed close to 20 deer with my Grendel. I have not had a single shot not pass through both shoulders. 123 SST

          Yup!

If any doubt remains, you could try reading Volumes 1 and 2 of the 6.5 Grendel Reloading Handbook. There is a good introduction and description of them in this forum: http://www.65grendel.com/forum/showt...ghlight=Volume

Google "Grendel elk hunting". There is a story from a very reputable person managing a 400 plus yard elk pass through kill. Maybe exception to the rule but impressive none the less.

Welcome. Having worked with this cartridge since 2009 now, I still say the same thing when shooting it at long range. On a dare last summer, some retired LEO's were out blasting away into the distance hillside, doing some "long range" training. They were trying to hit one particular target at 1200yds, that was maybe 3ftx2ft in dimension. They kept pestering me if I wanted a go at it, after none of them came anywhere near it. They were using .308's, .30-338's, and some other rifles.

Now long-range shooting is something I've been doing my entire adult life, so I have a formal way of approaching it, but I would have never guessed that my little 16" Grendel would have been able to group on that target at that distance. Nevertheless, I jumped up into my truck, leaned down to get the little blaster out of my bag, quickly looked at my ballistics app on my phone, and saw that I needed 14.4 Mils of elevation adjustment for 1200yds.

I got out, set up on one of their truck hoods, dialed in my elevation, settled the gun, and broke the first shot, which hit just barely off the left edge of the target. The next 4 rounds went on-target as fast as I could index the reticle and carefully break the trigger. There just happened to be no wind, and we were at 4400ft elevation, with 80 degree temperature. My app said I was still supersonic at 1318yds in those conditions. I was using factory Hornady 123gr A-MAX ammunition. It just doesn't make sense when you look at the tiny little case that is only 1.515" long, but that .510 BC launched from a very efficiently designed case does more than you would think, with very little powder.

For hunting, if you are looking for pass-throughs every time, the cup and core bullets will almost always do that with a broadside shot, but you will want to lean on premium bullets for quartering shots, especially as the game chest cavity becomes thicker. In that case, the Barnes, Hornady GMX, Nosler Partition, E-Tip, Accubond, and other premium projos will be something to consider. We worked hard to cover the actual performance of a lot of these projectiles in Volume II of the 6.5 Grendel Reloading Handbook series.

Welcome to the horde! I have had pass throughs on the 2 deer I have killed with my grendel. Both were medium sized bucks, broadside, 120 gr Speer Hot-Cor, broke ribs entering and exiting at 110 yds, 123 factory Hornady Amax 310 yds broke rib exiting. Neither one dropped in their tracks, but they were down inside of 50 yds.

Go for the Grendel. I was skeptical at first, but check my old threads and you will find that the horde will not mislead you. I have several kills and next year I'm gonna stretch the range out a little. You will love the lack of recoil. BTW my 30-06 is hanging in the basement covered with dust.

I have killed > 100 hogs with the grendel now. Not so many deer. I have kept most all my shots under 350 yards the majority around 75 yards and a few real close. It kills better than my .270 did with 130 grain bullets. Grendel 120-129gr cup and core bullets seemed to penetrate better then the plastic tipped NBTs. Super premimum Barnes and Swift Sicorocco bullets penetrate best, but who needs >20 inches of penetration once your through a hogs side plate? Bang! Thump! Time after time.

Every time I read LaRue's story I wonder why he doesn't build a rifle around the 6.5 grendel... Maybe he does?
