  • Out with the green, in with the Red White and Blue

In honor of the United States independence from the King of England, the 4th of July, our nations birthday, I bring you RCBS Red White and Blue.

We celebrate tomorrow our independence from tyranny, we have our own brand now. King Obama, whine, whine, the supreme court won't let him be king but he tries and tries none the less.

To celebrate our nations birth, I decided to replace my tried and true RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme with the RCBS Summit special Red White and Blue edition. How appropriate, tomorrow is the 4th of July, a day we, in the US celebrate our declaration of independence, a statement, a document, and the life investment of men, men who changed the world. I love my nation beyond all measures, I served in our military, and my son serves as a US Marine in crypto linguistics today, he specializes in Arabic linguistics interrogation.

So, I just couldn't resist, RCBS made 2,014 special edition, red, white, and blue summit single stage presses, mine is #1,186. I still load the bulk of my competition ammo on my Dillon 550B. My 200 and 300 yard loads for my service rifle and my 25 and 50 yard loads for my service pistol are loaded on the progressive 550B. But most of my hunting loads, and all of my 600 yard and beyond loads are loaded on a single stage press. Let's just hope the Summit serves me as well as my Rock Chucker Supreme has.

The Summit solves several deficiencies of the Rock Chucker Supreme. First and foremost it solves the spent primer collection issue that the Rock Chucker Supreme failed to handle well at all. Second, it solves a major problem of space, my rock chucker supreme linkage blocked two of the drawers of my reloading bench. I'm 60 years old and as I think about retirement and downsizing form my estate sized home, I need to conserve space. I don't plan on ceasing to reload, but I can't afford to continue to allocate the space I currently have allocated to reloading.

So here, in honor of my nations independence, and out national holiday, the 4th of July, and just because I wanted to. I offer these pics of my Red, White, and Blue Press.

A nice walk in the woods helps me relax and relieves tension....

The fact I'm dragging a shovel and a body should be irrelevant...

What a beaut! I'm still throwing the handle on a old RCBS RS2 and thinking about "upgrading" to a Rock Chucker. I might have to go for one of those when the time comes! Report on how you like it, If you don't mind.

I recently added a Summit to my reloading room, although mine is the familiar green. I load most of my handgun ammo on Dillon Square Deals. I have one configured for small primers and the other for large primers. I really like the way the Summit works. I like the free access to the loading stage that its design allows. I realize this is totally subjective but the Summit has the smoothest motion and allows better feel than any press I have used before. I particularly like the feel I get during bullet seating with the short lever that is available for it.

I might have to see about meeting you in person with the ulterior motive of seeing this one.

How do you like the plate under the press btw?

I like the plate a lot, stiffens the bench but also allows quick change of tools. Notice the bench mounted primer tool, I also mount, case trimmers, runnout gauges and others to it as needed.

All, I loaded 50 rounds of 6.5 Grendel on this press last night and measured all 50 for runnout, 49/50 was .001" or less, one was .002". That's about the same as I get with my Wilson Arbor press so I think it is good enough. And I really like the access to the shell holder, the case goes in clean and clear of any obstructions. The press is smooth and the spent primers go into the catcher flawlessly.
The only down side is no ability to prime cases. That isn't a downside to me as I have a bench mounted primer system that I much prefer over press or hand priming. But some who are used to priming on the press will find that a minus.
I am also perplexed why I have to cam over so much harder with this press to size a case than with my Rock Chucker. I've only sized cases for my 6.5x55 so far. The Grendel's I loaded were from prepped cases. I'll see if it holds true for other calibers.

The R,W & B are no longer on sale. The green Summit is still on sale for $55 less ($175 vs $230). There is also a code for 20% off: OFF20WEL14 plus a $10 rebate

Checked it out further, all is well with other calibers, just my 6.5x55 shell holder to die tolerance seems to be the problem.

Decided to give it a work out today. I'm really starting to like this press.

Left to right is the 6.5x55 with 123 grain Hornady SST, 140 grain Nosler Accubond, and 155 grain Lapua Mega and 9.3X62 with 286 grain Nosler Patition, 285 grain Lapua Mega, 286 grain Barnes TSX, 286 grain Honady Interlock and 250 grain Nosler Accubond.
My 6.5x55 is used for light game up to elk and the 9.3x62 is used for heavy game up to anything that walks the face of the earth. The 9.3x62 is also excellent for driven game where shot placement may not be so precise.

That is a great pair and definitely in the do everything category for hunting rifles. The 9.3x62 is a star.
