AR loading and bullet crimp questions

I have never loaded for the AR platform. I was wondering what the thoughts were on crimping bullets.
Is there a concern of bullet setback upon feeding ?
If you crimp, do you only use bullets with cannelures ?
Does anyone use a taper crimp ?

Also, does anyone load ammo to jam bullets into the rifling ?
I have read some people have done this.
This doesn't seem reliable for an autoloading rifle.
How would you guarantee the bolt is actually locked ?

    thanks,
    Lee

All very good questions and many answers can be found in this forum by using the customized search engine: http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=01...d_0xcu1o&hl=en

I think that is the right one.

Many of us crimp, even if just a little. Some do not. Cannelure and non-cannelure. I reload almost exclusively 123 gr Amax and SST. I crimp both. Do not load to jam the lands. How much off the lands depends on the various loads and your rifle. Somebody else can chime in on the standard ranges of jump, I do not want to misspeak.

I taper crimp loads that I may produce in mass in the future. I don't want to worry about storing it loosely. If it's a hunting load that, quite frankly, I'll never be able to afford to produce in mass, I don't worry about it, because they'll be stored in a nice little box.

I don't think anybody would suggest jamming into the lands unless it's the VLDs that are designed to. I start my load development at 0.020" off the lands. After I find a load the rifle likes I'll play with the jump down to 0.005". However, I'm more comfortable staying 0.010" off the lands.

Of course the magazine will ultimately determine how far you can seat. How close to the rifling do you get with magazine length reloads. I know that depends on the ogive of different bullets, but on the average say.

I don't crimp, and use the internal length of the mag as the max OAL.

If you want to jam the projectile into the lands of an AR you'll have to hand load each cartridge through the ejection port (the magazine's internal length will prevent you doing this otherwise. Sinclair sell single-shot magazine followers ($18) designed to assist feeding of longer than normal cartridges.

That said, I would advise against it. Jamming into the lands is not a technique I see much of around F Class bolt guns, let alone AR's (as you probably know, extracting an unfired cartridge stuck in the lands is a messy business).
