    .22 Ammo prices and supply

I know, its not Grendel, but lots of us use .22 for training, and go through big volumes. Feel free to comment, or post a note when you find it cheap online. I've tried to pull a few posts to here from other places but they got lost in the move.

bwaites - I'm trying to be positive about .22 prices. Last time I bought any I paid less than .02 a round for 2000 Win M-22. I check Ammoseek weekly and it is just now down to about .11 + shipping. Glad I still have some stashed away.

All I can find locally on a regular basis is match at $25 for a 50 round box

The vast majority of the .22 I can find anywhere is high priced target ammo. The vast majority of .22 ammo shot is low priced plinking ammo, with CCI being on the top end at 6-7 cents a round in winter 2013.

I shoot some high priced stuff when warranted for matches, but most of my practice ammo is bulk Federal or CCI. The value of those rounds is less than .05/round.

Occasionally WalMart and the other big stores will get it and sell it at that price, but others are marking it up into the .10/round area, which is what Ammoseek etc. show. Since WalMart and the others still sell it at .05 or so, I seriously doubt the ammo manufacturers have raised the cost to prices that warrant the .10 or more per round that some are selling bulk ammo at. However, this is America, and we have a free market system (sort of!) and I have no issue with people charging whatever they can get for it, I just refuse to pay .10 when its .05 ammo!

I just picked up some Lapua .22 at less than .10/round, so I know its out there sometimes.

I fully agree! Which is why my synthetic stock 10-22, which is nearly a year old, has not had a single round down the barrel. If I'm going to pay 10 or 15 cents a round, I may as well go the extra couple and reload some centerfire.

What I find amazing is that I can shoot shotgun for essentially the same price as some .22! I find #8 on sale for 4.99/25 fairly regularly, and some places have it for 5.99 all the time. How can there be ANY justification for .22 pricing when a new round of 12 gauge costs 20 cents! There is 10-20 times the material in a shotgun shell, plus a more complicated loading process!

We are crazy to support an industry that has this kind of disparity!

                Amen to that, Bill.

I buy judiciously and have managed to keep at least 2,000 rounds of 22LR in the can over the last couple years. This is, of course, with me only shooting 100 or so, each month. More or less defeats the purpose of using 22LR in lieu of centerfire. When the cost of 22's approach that of my reloads, it is ludicrous to buy it at all. My only gripe is that Wall-e-World imposes no limits and allows the *$$w|pes to buy an entire pallet and clean them out with a single purchase. I have to confess feeling a little glee when I'd heard of one such moron offering to resell at an obscene markup, while still in the store, and end up getting jumped in the parking lot. Apparently he lost the whole load. Yes, that was wrong. Yes, I still smirked.
If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

Its just bizarre to me that .22 has disappeared like it has. CCI alone, in Lewiston, Idaho, produces more than 4 MILLION rounds a day! That's right at 1.5 BILLION rounds a year out of that one factory!

And then when I look at the cost of .22 vs Shotgun shells, my head goes bonkers!! Shotgun shells have 10-20 times the material and are harder to load, but cost not even twice what .22 costs! BIZARRE!

I'm like you, I buy very judiciously, and I have sufficient for about a years shooting, if I don't do too many "bring all the kids" outings. BUT I LIKE TO DO "bring all the kids" outings!

Locally, WalMart limits you to ONE BOX, if its a 50 rounder or a brick, so the guys have to stand in line with all their friends to get enough to take to the gun shows or post on GunBroker. BUT it doesn't seem to matter. There is never enough.

Yeah, our Walmart ended limits on all ammo EXCEPT .22lr. You can still buy 3X boxes of 50 or 100, or 1X of 500+. Assuming you're in the store, at the counter within ten minutes or so of when it's discovered that they have any.

A fellow recently scored a good amount of ammo from the local gun shop, including some very hard to find 22 LR. He was on his way home, when he stopped at a traffic light. A very attractive blonde was crossing the street, and as she walked past his car, she saw the ammunition in his back seat. She stopped, and walked up to his window. In a very sexy voice, she asked him if he would like to trade some ammunition for some hot, steamy sex.

The guy thought for a moment, and he said; "Sure, honey. What kind of ammunition Have you got?"
