THIS is the Dedicated 65G Military Bullet I Want

Sneaky, if you ever have the time and interest, perhaps you would consider making a 6.5 version of the M80A1 projectile (right, below)? So we could see what it would look like, and how much it would weigh?

I'm talking just a mock-up, not test bullets for actual shooting.

Maybe use a Nosler E-tip, so it could have only one groove to simulate a crimping cannelure? Give it a boat tail as in the photo above, and reshape the ogive to secant, then drill out the nose to accept a steel tip with a long shank similar to that of the sectioned M855A1 bullet below.

What do you think? Can do? Or too much work?

OK, just thinking out loud here. . . .

What if one had a 6.5mm copper alloy bullet of 90 grains, like, oh, a standard hunting bullet with a 7mm polymer tip, but then one substituted a 7mm metal M80A1-like tip of 10 grains? Then one would have a modern 6.5 military bullet of 100 grains. Hmmm. . . .

I dunno, John. For one thing, I'm fairly sure that a 6.5mm bullet with M80A1/M855A1 construction would have a steel penetrator considerably heavier than 10 grains. Maybe 25-30 grains, as a guess, what with the large diameter stem that extends down to below the cannelure (see sectional view, above).

Too much guessing involved. That's why I'd like to see a mock-up made, so it could actually be weighed.

And in order to maximize powder capacity, I'm thinking the bullet should NOT be nearly as long as a Lapua 123gr Scenar or 144gr FMJBT, which really eat up powder space:

I'd rather have the bullet little or no longer than the Norma 120gr FMJBT:

Whether such a bullet would weigh 100 grains, or what, I have no idea.

Oh, man. Stan, I drew up a plan to make the 855 A1 steel penetrator tip back in 2003. I was off work for a while- also watched the IraQ war daily on TV. I thought that a hardened tip may be needed to punch thru those canvas coats, that the bad guys were wearing..
So I sent in my ideas to Federal- the design they ended up making is semi close to my first thoughts. I have never seen an A1 up close- of current design.

Also designed the Aluminum tip, the copper tip, Bronze tip, the Bismuth tip. Been busy for us all.

Let's also find a way to get some summy sausage to you, & ROS , & Jasmith. out there in Cali.

Been busy, will stay on point for ever, on this guys.
We need to move onto the hunting bullet threads.-

Does that mean you can't be talked into doing the .mil bullet mock-up?

Never mind, Dan. It was a dumb idea that can't go anywhere, so it'd be a waste of your time and mine to pursue it further.

I'm okay with you sending me a PM.

As to the mission, I'll have to see what it is before I can say yea or nay.
