The Art of the Accurate Mouse Fart

I think this deserves it's own thread, the "Subsonic Load that Cycles" thread is missing out on a lot of potentially fun loads in the pursuit of a semi-auto load. So if we throw away the functioning action requirement and pursue accuracy and general quietness, what can we come up with?

The only realistic goal (other than reduced-power giggle factor) is to come up with a load gentle enough to be used on grouse, rabbits, and other tasty critters without the target quarry being violently detonated by high velocity loads.

Being able to shoot comfortably without hearing protection is also nice. It seems the attitude of many that subsonic rounds are not worth the trouble without the use of a suppressor, I respectfully disagree. There is no such thing as a "silent" firearm, even with a "silencer". I used to shoot subsonic 44 Mags out of a H&R Handi-Rifle with a Coastal MIMS .45 can and the hammer noise and bullet impact were the only detectable sounds from the firearm, according to my ears. However the noise was still enough to make any game within range acutely aware of my presence and would scare off deer to nearly the same extent of full power loads. I'm not trying to be sneaky, but I do value what's left of my hearing. Even supersonic reduced-loads provide a real relief to violently loud full power loads.

I like the idea of being able to carry a second magazine with reduced loads for a quick switch from full power to engage grouse while hunting for larger game. Grouse (and rabbits to an extent) are notoriously stupid so fumbling around for 5-10 seconds changing ammo isn't much of an issue. I'm trying to find something that will shoot close to my POA with the same scope settings as the higher power loads, but @ 50-100 yards.

The best one I've found so far has been 7.0gr unique behind a 140gr Nosler Part. factory blemish bullet:

    7gr unique 140gr nosler.jpg

@ 50 yards I consider it Grouse/Rabbit accurate and to my surprise the 140's did not seem to tumble. Quickload seems to think this is a 1368 FPS load but it sounds subsonic. I hold 2 Mils over for zero @ 50y.

So what "Gallery Gun" loads have y'all come up with? I'd like to get a feel for what is possible with lighter bullets as well, since 140grs is way more than adequate for bunnies.
"Bugout bag?..What's that? Is that all the junk you sidewalk commandos plan on humping when the SHTF? I'll grab a Nylon 66, a box of 22s and a poncho liner and in less than a week I will have all of your stuff and everything else that I need for the duration."

Interesting too. I havent tried anything yet as all my brass is loaded up... i wanted to try trail boss for a subsonic load that doesnt cycle... as many times i shoot single shot anyways with my grendel. I need to buy that single shot magizine block to make it a bit easier...

This is well posed challenge and one that many of us can likely meet!

Using a small enough charge of a fast-burning charge and the muzzle pressure might go to near zero or slightly negative. This would make the resulting load very easy on the ears indeed.

Some of us could also try Trail Boss with both cast and jacketed bullets.

Lets revive this thread. I wonder if we can get a functional sub load with the 11" and 12" barrels with a 140gn or 160gn bullet with a faster powder?

I loaded 123 nosler cc's from 5.4 up to 6.5 and all were subsonic. We had my 22" Grendel with a buddies 7.62 sd attached. Silly quiet. Never tested for accuracy other than looking over scope aimed at a 10" dia pine tree at @ 150 and would hit it with every load. We were giddy it was so quiet, and of course no cycling with these.

Here is one I tried a few years ago:
            Trail Boss - 9 gr
120 Sierra Pro Hunter - 1187 Fps from a 20" barrel (did not cycle action of course)
I've been meaning to revisit this and drop the powder charge a little for a single shot, subsonic load.

Awesome Klem thanks for the info! I have 3 blkouts suppressed, 2 ARs and 1 encore. Love the single shot encore! I use TB with light 90gn xtp bullets in it or 120 plated for subs in the encore and 208gn in the AR for cycling. Now im wanting a quiet load for the 12" grendel but would love to get it to cycle. I know TB would work with light bullets as single shot which would be fine BUT... we always want more! Im thinking with a heavy bullet 140gn+ and maybe some A1680 or such combined with the 12" barrel and carbine gas system it may be possible.

Yes, the Holy Grail, a cycling subsonic Grendel that also shoots supersonic.

                  Punching your plan into Quickload.
To keep your load subsonic from your short 12" barrel with A1680 and a 142gn SMK the load needs to be 12grains or less. There is enough gas even with a mid-length gas port to cycle (showing 6,000 lbs at the 9" mark. Need min 5,500 lbs and a normal buffer). But, it fills the case to only about 40%. To prevent flash-over and SEE you would need to use a filler material that fills the space, burns completely and is inert. I have seen Dacron; synthetic sleeping bag filling used with some success.
Thanks Klem! I know its asking a lot from the cartridge but it would it be fun. I really dont need it to be a subsonic round since I have to many blkouts now but I would like to find the Holy Grail. I take it you have quick load, would you punch the data in for a 160gn bullet and see what it spits out using A1680? Im really not interested in trying filler material. Oh and im using a carbine length gas system. Thanks for your help and info!

I have read some of his work awhile back. Has he got anything close to cycling?
