    Hog Duo Down

Hunted a buddy's place last night. He has a hog problem and had plenty of deer hunters keeping them in check, but they are pretty well done. Got permission to help out and three of us went out and watched different parts of the property. I thought they stuck me in a bad spot on top of a hill where it was really windy, but it turned out to be a good spot. Other than birds, hogs were all that I saw and hogs were what I was after.

The first hog kept sniffing at the air and you can see him do it just before my shot. I figured he was the most vigilant hog and so he was the one that needed to be shot first.

Had a bit of trouble with everything after the first hog. They all ran toward me after the first shot, passing beneath the level of the hand rail. So I was going through a lot of contortions to try to track them as they went by. One shot hit. One shot was low. The last shot was terribly late and I never managed to get back on target while they ran out of my scope picture as I lost the ability to twist any further around.

200 lb boar and 130 lb sow. Both were through and through with permanent wound cavities from the Hornady SST 123 gr. factory ammo that I could wiggle around a stick in the wound that was the size of my little finger.

    It is a short video...

Yeah, nice job DNS. You are doing your best to help out the local farm guys.
You eat them 200 lb. units- I know I keep asking, wow. Smelly porky, taste okay?

Some of the big ones don't stink, but most have some odor and some have some really strong odor...and they don't have to be big to have it. I don't even like handling stinky hogs because everything it touches stinks after that. As for eating, there is considerable opinion. Some say NO to the stinky ones. Others claim it is all about how you prepare and cook the food. We have made it into sausage that was pretty good. Some folks just harvest the backstraps.

Mostly, we give the hogs back to nature, stinky or not. Freezers only get so full and few folks want a free hog, not unless you skin, butcher, and package the meat ready for the freezer for them. They just aren't hungry enough, not even if I deliver the hog.
