    Cephalectomized Sow, AKA Grendelized

A lot of things went wrong on this hunt but a few went right. I got chased out of the stand by storms and by the time I got my gear in the truck, the rains had nearly stopped. I decided to go home anyway, but checked a couple of places on the way home including this one where I sometimes butcher hogs or process the carcasses for skeletons. On the first pass I saw what looked to be hogs or deer in the area I do my processing. On the second pass, I decided it was hogs and drove a 50 or 60 yards down the road past them and pulled over to confirm. Yep, hogs. As I was in the right of way, I had to stalk toward and up the gravel driveway to get onto private property. Leaves and gravel crunched with each step, but the hogs were oblivious. I got to within about 40 yards.

I picked the hog that was the best shot. Fired. The scope went black because I had not properly secured the battery compartment cover. Squealing started. There was a flood light in the yard and I could see with my naked eye as one of the larger pigs with running by right in front of me and disappeared to my left. I think that was the targeted pig. All the other pigs disappeared as well.

I scanned the field for the targeted pig with no luck and then checked out the target area. On the way there, got the scope restarted. Found a hog down in the target area, but the impact was nowhere near my aim point. However, the impact blew apart the skull, splitting the frontal bones of the skull and ejecting brain matter. The little gal came in at 40 lbs.

I will search later today for the other hog.
Kill a hog. Save the planet.

Been a fan of the Grendel from the very beginning and haven't second guessed that choice one time.

loved the story, 00Spy, and the video music was perfect for that one. also, in your first color photo, I noted and appreciated your enthusiastic, almost aggressive use of red in the composition to balance the willfulness of the bright green grass. sooo much red, yet a finely reserved energy. well done, I say. and a good shot, too.
