    Hornady One-Shot

For those of you that use this: do you clean the lube off your cases after sizing? So far I've found mixed opinions on whether it increases bolt thrust or not.

I also wet tumble mine in hot soapy water for 30 min or so to clean the lube off.

        Tumble to remove lube.

I don't have a tumbler but I do have an ultrasonic. Would soapy water in that be just as good? Or should I wipe them down with alcohol by hand?

I tumble, lube, run through full size die, tumble, and then everything else afterwards.

I lube with Dillon Spray lube, size, prime. load, shoot. No, I don't spend a second trying to clean off the cases. In fact, I rarely tumble any rifle brass. If I do polish brass, I polish it, lube it, size, prime, load and shoot.

Those spray lubes are pretty thin when they dry and sizing them tends to remove most of the lube. No need to clean them afterward.

I haver only used it once so far to load up 400 rounds and I didn't wipe them off after loading. I have shot about 150 of them so far without any trouble. The thought I had was any lube left would aides preventing magazine feed issues from the magazine. I don't know if my thinking is accurate but I haven't had any feed hangups since I started shooting the handloads. I only had a couple with the 450 factory rounds I shot out of new ASC mags but I can't say for sure if it was the lube or just breaking in the mags with use?

I used Hornady spray lube, do a quick wipe down with paper towel after sizing. Haven't had a problem, yet, but I worry about possible film build-up in my die. Anyone ever have a problem with dirty dies?

I've never questioned the wisdom of removing case lube, since all factory ammo arrives without any.

This thread has given me pause for thought, though. A quick search lead me to another thread over at TFL.

A very thoughtfully crafted reply, and well cited. I will still tumble my brass, but if it will be shot soon, I may start using my sizing die, when loading 5.56 on my progressive. I've been sizing and tumbling cases separatly, to avoid leaving lube on loaded ammo - perhaps to no good end?

About every 200 rounds or so (I usually load less than 50 at a time), I spray the inside of my dies with Hornady's One Shot Gun Cleaner (which is also a lubricant, but a bit thinner than the One Shot case lube) and wipe it out with a paper towel and then blow it out with compressed air to be sure there are no paper towel remnants.

When I use the One Shot Case lube, after sizing, I lay about 10 out at a time on a terry towel and cover it with the other half and "roll" the cases between the towel. This gets off most of the extra lube (which is not a lot to begin with).

My main concern in removing excess lubricant (probably carried over from decades ago when I used the thick RCBS lubricant on a rolling pad) is the possibility of the loaded cases picking up dirt and grit and then being caught between the case wall and the chamber when fired, with the resulting "sandpaper" effect on my brass and chamber.

If youre picking up grit with one shot, ur using too much. I've loaded 50-60,000 rounds with one shot and I've never cleaned it off. That's the perk of using it, it won't comtaminate primers or powder, and won't affect bolt thrust, or headspace. Actually, any lube applied too thick would decrease bolt thrust wouldn't it?

I clean my dies about every 2-300 rounds. The lube builds up at the shoulder juncture in the die. Eventually it will cause hydraulic dents if not removed. I clean in mineral spirits, then acetone, then lube back up with one shot case lube
