Except on bright moon nights, you will need to use an IR illuminator with a Gen II. A Gen III will work most of the month except on very dark nights (no moon or cloudy) or when you are in the woods. On those nights, you will need an illuminator. For 200-300 yards, your best bet would likely be a laser illuminator as from Luna Optics. The coyotes WILL SEE the glow from the illuminator, be it a flashlight style or laser.

For 200-300 yards with thermal for coyotes reliably, I would want to go with a 640 resolution scope and some magnification and then you are in the $5-8K range.

Folks may suggest you can get away with less and you probably can, but you put in the stipulation of "reliably" and there are a lot of conditions that will have a negative impact on night optics.

Thank you so much for that enlightening response. I just might pick one of the scopes up. Peace!
