Load data for 100 gr. sierra varmint hp

Anyone have load data for the 100 gr sierra varmint HP. I don't see anything in the handbooks or any of my manuals. The closest thing I can find is for the 100 gr. Lapua. I have 8208 xbr, benchmark, and comp ar powder. Any help or experience with the bullet would be greatly appreciated.

The Hornady manual list the same charges for 3 different bullets. It has a max charge of benchmark of 29.4 Grns. I'm thinking of reducing that charge by 10% and starting there. The big question mark is c.o.a l. I emailed sierra but no response yet.

      AC8:

When ever I have faced this situation, I used the same load as any other bullet of the same weight.

Or, you can always go with a load for anything heavier.

I think I'll give it a shot. You would think sierra would publish load data for the grendel in their manual.

My J & T 6.5 Grendel measured 2.148 with 100 grain Sierra Varmint using Hornady C.O.A.L. gauge. The bullet is pretty blunt and I loaded mine to 2.140 with 29.0 grains H-335 and Remington small rifle primers in Hornady brass. I have used this load and powder in PPU cases with a couple different large rifle primers ( PMC and another non US manufactured primer, can't remember brand).

I have IMR 8208 XBR but I haven't used any, I have looked for AR Comp to buy but have never found any locally. I bought several hundred 100 grain Sierra Varmint factory seconds a couple years ago and they have been just as accurate as the retail bullet in my rifle.

What kind of accuracy have you gotten out of the sierra varminters. I used speer tnt bullets in my 6.8 with very good results so I thought the sierra being similar should be pretty accurate.

I got on average 1"-1.5" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with the 100 grain Sierra Varmints. I got similar results with 90 grain TNT using Accurate 2230 powder. I think this is good enough accuracy out of a 16" non free float barrel I'm using. I haven't shot paper targets beyond 100 yards so I can't say how the bullet does at extended range. A friend used the Sierra 85 & 100 grain varmint bullets in a 264 Win Mag and got excellent accuracy.

I used the 90 grain tnt to take a nice buck at a little over 300 yards. It had no exit wound but the deer dropped in its track. I would have bought those but they were backordered. I will call seirra tomorrow and post the data they give me.

                  Did you recover the bullet?

It came apart. There were small chunks of the jacket in the tissue, but no large piece that I saw.

I found the load data in varmint magazine. There is a 4 page article on the grendel with two pages of load data. Its worth picking up if you come across it. Here is the data for the 100 gn. Sierra varmint HP. Fired from a factory AA hunter with 18 inch barrel.
                      c.o.a.l. 2.050 in.
                      Powder - IMR 8208 xbr.
                      Charge (gr.) - Velocity (fps)
                      28 - 2581
                      29 - 2664
                      30 - 2762
                      31 - 2848

                      Powder H335
                      c.o.a.l. - 2.050
                      Charge (gn) - velocity (fps)
                      28-2556
                      29 - 2629
                      30 - 2707
                      31 - 2848

I was looking at these, I wonder how they would do with benchmark?

Sierra had no data for comp-ar. They did give data for benchmark.
                            C.O.A.L - 2.050
                            Powder - Benchamrk
                            Min. - 27.0 grs.
                            Max - 29.9 grs.

They suggested a little different data for 8208 xbr also:
                            Powder - 8208 XBR
                            C.O.A.L. - 2.050
                            Min. - 29.0
                            Max. - 30.8C

Great thanks! I try some of these out, might be a good match between velocity and energy from a 12" barrel.
