    Sickness and in Health

Before any of you think it, I didnt marry my grendel. Texas wouldnt let me.

But, I have been sick and infection this past week, and it makes me ask. What do you guys do to keep well during your life? Any foods, supplaments, tricks? We all get sick, but being able to stay well and combat it is essential.

    How do you do it?

Drink half your body weight X ounces per day of pure, clean water. Don't smoke, don't drink, eat whole wheat breads, rye, lots of vegetables (especially from your own garden), replace white sugar/crap snacks with fruit, sleep well, take walks regularly, but most importantly...choose to be happy. I find that the smell of freshly-burnt powder emanating from my AR chamber helps with that...

      DC:

Hard to say. Some of it is genetic which you can't do anything about. The rest is up to you.

From a physical stand point I would say that tough and demanding physical exercise five or six days a week may be the most important factor. If a guy or gal does this with specific goals in mind, the rest will fall into line such as rest, diet, alcohol consumption, etc. The problem is that few have the discipline to conduct very hard physical exercise five or six days a week so they think that taking vitamins etc will solve their problems -- obesity in most cases.

From the psychological side, staying focused on short and long term goals is probably another foundation as it leads to such things as exercise and diet, maintaining a confident mental attitude, maintaining motivation, etc. Research into overall wellness shows that spirituality plays a vital role in psychological well being. This does not necessarily mean religious following although the majority of Americans follow a religion. What it means in this context is that people who are spiritual believe their lives have positive meaning.

The issue isn't as complex as many think. Believe your life has (positive) meaning, have self generated goals that you know you will strive to attain because you are motivated to attain those goals, and maintain a very high level of physical fitness. Take my word for it and many others here who have been through tough and great times. These three basic things -- spirituality, goals, and fitness do get guys and gals through very tough times, very quickly. And they seem to enhance one's enjoyment of the good times even more.

What all of this does in health terms is reduce either self generated mental stress or literally, physiological stress that combined weaken the immune system. It doesn't guarantee you won't get sick from a virus or something. What it does is allow you to resist infections better and if you do get sick, to recover faster.

Off to shoot a prone match.

Diet wise plenty of healthy protein. Just try not to eat anything fried. Lots of vegetables. Exercise with a regular routine like For instance for me it is Legs on Sundays, Chest on Mondays, Arms Tues, Back on Wed and Shoulders Thurs. Do abs everyday. But i rest Fri and Sat to spend time out with my wife and kids on those nights. I find that having certain thing set on certain days keeps me more focused and you get a better workout that way. You can also take a protein supplement to help you get enough protein each day. The average person who doesnt work out should get about 1 gram per pound of protein a day. If you do work out try to get 2 grams per pound of protein a day. Many people dont know that when you work out your tearing the muscles. You need the protein to build it back. You need a good multivitamin. And carbs are another important factor. Timing is crucial. You need to eat what is called slow digesting carbs all the time on average. For instance Whole wheat bread like the other gentleman said is a slow digesting carb. Sweet potatoes not (yams) but a regular sweet potato is a slow digesting carb and is better for you than a regular potato which is a fast digesting carb. Pasta is a fast digesting carb as a pose to wheat pasta. Brown rice is slow digesting as a pose to white rice. By eating slow digesting carbs its not fattening your body uses it efficiently and it last longer for fuel. Fast digesting carbs cause and insulin spike which give you energy levels a crash and make you feel sluggish. But timing these carbs is the key. Basically slow digesting all the time until after a workout. Then within 30 minutes of good hard exercise eat fast digesting carbs. They will replenish the glygogen in your muscles and speed recovery without any negative side affects. Above all practice the dont eat crap diet. If it looks like it would be crap it probably is. Candy bar vs tomato. Its simple. Dont forget to reward yourself with something special every once in a while as long as its in moderation. And as the gentleman above said be happy. Have something for yourself for me it is weapons, drag racing and working out and my family. Keep yourself happy and focused on goals short or long term and the rest falls into place. And as previously has been stated plenty of water. Not soft drinks.

Health problems are not necessarly all bad. I have an irregular heartbeat(Lots of PVCs) I can have a 2.5 secend pause between heartbeats 2-3 times a min. Those long pauses help my long range shooting a lot. I went in for a heart work up (the cardiologist son is one of my sparring partners) He suggested a beta blocker which also helps my shooting as it cuts down on fine tremmers we all have . He told me my heart was fine otherwise. You know what you should and should not be eating, try to keep the bad stuff out of the house. I do martial arts 4 days a week and find that STRETCHING helps my stiff old body much more now than when I was young, I suggest a stretching program like yoga or tae chi would help a lot. Runnning just 5 miles 1 day a week helps a lot with stamnia. And all that exersise is sure to help your stress levels. Did you know that exersise helps depression more than antidepressent medicines? And regular sex also increases life span-go figure that one out. In short you know what to do, the trick is doing it .. and a little luck.

Hmmmmmmmmm...lots of martial arts, running, sex, shooting......that's enough of a good diet in my book! Nice cardiopulmonary pauses too. That definitely will help your long-range groups daddy! I always knew there was something to Tae Chi...

Seriously, if your lifestyle is more like mine at the very least take a vitamin/mineral horse pill, an aspirin, fiber and fish oil capsules every day. +1 on lots of water. Keeps you flushed.

Gunpowder contains nitroglycerin, which dilates your coronary arteries and helps you keep from dying every time you handle your Grendel. That's why it's important to put more powder in than it can burn, because it dilates your coronaries every time you shoot and keeps you alive during your bliss. You might get a headache, but that's not your high tech hearing protectors, that's the nitroglycerin, which is proven to be beneficial to you, unless you're in front of the Grendel, or if you're taking Viagra, which will then lower you're blood pressure and kill you. If you do take Viagra, do not shoot your Grendel instead of your smaller caliber weapon you take your Viagra for, or you might die. While we're on the subject, don't take iron tablets with your Viagra either, or you may involuntarily spin around and point to the north. Be wary, if you live in a nursing home, they may give you Viagra just to keep you from rolling out of bed.

Other things to keep you in good health are to work the handle of your Dillon progressive reloaded up and down as much as possible. This is known as aerobic exercise, and is very good for you and your budget. Believe, me, if you work it up and down yourself as much as possible you will shoot much more often and more cheaply than if someone else does it for you. You will live longer, and have much more potent ammunition than you can get otherwise.

Homebrewing your own beer helps tremendously. There are no preservatives, and besides tasting much better, it is very wholesome, coming straight from the grain, and causing you to make much more rational decisions concerning your health. Actually, this entire response has been written after consuming homebrewed beer, which by the way saved the world, and is clear evidence of it's healthful qualities. (Food can't be healthy by the way, as it is clearly dead. It can only be healthful if it is good for you.)

Keeping fit is a right way. But sickness is something that cannot be controlled. Some people get more while some never even get it. Or rarely get it. So eat natural foods, exercise, worry less..

I'm also into taking high doses of Vitamin C anytime I think I've been around people with the flu, feeling that malaise might be coming on, or before flying.

Turn off your TV, enjoy your family , friends, have goals, discipline, exercise, eat healthy, have a can do attitude, have purpose, no tobacco , limit alcohol if you drink, understand there are things in this life more important than yourself and live close to a shooting range.

If I turn off my TV, I'd have nothing to do all day...

You must be planning a career in Administrative Government. It's good to have goals.

There is a ton of amazing tv nowadays though. Most of the educational channels went to crap with pawn shops, honey boo boo, and the like...but scripted tv has never been remotely as good and there are newer channels like Smithsonian that have epic stuff on routinely. But if I do pry myself off the couch, and actually get up and do things, there are also a huge number of great podcasts and books that you can mainline directly into your brain, so you really are not missing that much. : )
