I'm just wondering if you guys think that the grendel kills "that much better" out to 400 yards than the 223/556?

Welcome to the board!
"that much better"? For my purposes? Yes.
A properly constructed 120ish grain 6.5mm projectile delivers significantly more energy into the target. Bigger wound tracks, and bigger exits.
ETA: Shot placement is still king mind you (I've killed plenty of deer and other critters with 5.56). But I'll take a bigger hole in the right place when I can get it.Last edited by Variable; 08-14-2015, 09:09 AM.Life member NRA, SAF, GOA, WVSRPA (and VFW). Also member WVCDL. Join NOW!!!!!

500 yard Montana White Tail shot last year by a member. You wouldn't take that shot with a 556!12.5" SBR Grendel - Need Barrel

decisions
I'm trying to decide between building a 6.5 Grendel and a 223. I have a lower with a collapsible stock. I just need to decide between the Grendel and the 556 round.
Midway has an 18 inch 6.5 Grendel 2 barrel that is made by ar stoner. I was thinking that it would be a good starting point because I could cut it down a few inches if I thought it was too long.

I have plenty of 16 inch black guns and my grendel was the first 20 inch (ar style) rifle. To tell you the truth while I notice the length...I don't notice that the length interferes with anything I'm using it for. Wether it's hunting or longer range target stuff.

If I were you I would check out the lower priced BHW barrels that mark sells at precision firearms. Lots of guys are having success with those. The stoner barrels can b hit and miss.

Gentlemen, Barbarians, and Vile Members of the Unwashed Horde: Many of you will remember we used to sell barrels here as a forum fundraiser. That time has come again. ======================= SPECIFICATION UPDATE MUST READ It is covered later in this thread, but please note that the rifling specification has changed. At the price point you're alluding to, there is only one recommendation, as far as I'm concerned: Go with the BHW. They are available in either .264 LBC or in 6.5 Grendel, 1:9 or 1:8 twist, with or without bolts, and (depending on the source) with a variety of finishes and virtually any style fluting you would likely desire. If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

Without a doubt my Grendel kills what I hunt better than any 5.56. Accuracy is most probably better if you are shooting past 300 yards. Recoil is very manageable if you are shooting at multiple running targets.
If you limit yourself to 500 yards a 16-18 inch barrel is fine
