I bought a NF NXS 3.5-15x50mm scope originally for my 18" 'DMR' grendel AR, and quickly found it to be a bit too much scope for the rifle. She's about a .75-1moa shooter, and honestly 15x isn't needed at all within 800yd. Especially considering the size and weight of that scope. Sooo, I bought a NXS 2.5-10x32mm and imho its a perfect fit. Its not too big, not too heavy, and its zoom range provides enough to get to 800yd+, and low enough zoom to come in very close. I also can't say enough about the NF NP-R2 reticle. It's all moa graduations that match up perfectly with the turrets. To me, that is much easier to use than mils, or at least scopes that mix mils and moa. So for long range plinking, and short-mid range hunting its an amazing sighting system.
As far as anything else, if its long range, I find a NF scope that fits the role (im a huge NF fan). Close range optics... I refuse to spends money on acogs, and don't really like eotechs. I prefer small, light, open-top. Red dots, like the burris fasfire. I don't like relying on batteries, though, and generally take iron sights over electronics. As far as iron sights go, the rear sightmust have BOTH elevation and windage adjustmens.
I'm new to this site, having just aquired a Grendel Overwatch, but I spent a LONG time on research before finalising my choices. This rifle will be used for hog and coyote hunting in South Georgia as well as the occasional fox or feral cat. I opted for a Xtreme Tactical Scope XTR-14 1X-4X-24mm for my primary scope. It is a true 1 power and allows both eyes open use of the illuminated central portion of the reticle and close target aquisition is "almost" as fast as the fastfire I have on my shotgun. I also like the reticle sans illumination and it has proven dead on to 200yds, which is the longest distance I ahve available to me in the Metro Atlanta area. Time will tell how it works in the fields of South Georgia. For smaller critters at longer distance I will be using a Nikon 6x18 with their BDC reticle, I kile this because it is easier, for me,to center small tagrets inside the opening and not cover any portion of the critter with a cross hair. I have both scopes mounted in the Burris P.E.P.R. mounts and have been satsified by them maintaing zero very well. This set up has worked well on the 204ruger Sabre Defense that I was using before having one too many hogs cause me to have to give chase..... at 64 I prefer to leave them DRT or run no further than 50yds.
Prefer Iron sights (either Mil specs A4 , BUIS or Target type) for everyday carry /usage ...............usually the most dependable, Red dots are great for room clearing / across the street shooting IMO 300 is way stretching it I would call 150 max IF it has a 2MOA dot otherwise close contact only (BTW I consider this a great sight for Hog hunting, quick fast and deadly).
ACOG, and EO Tech get left in base camp /or at the house when I'm doing missions, some love them, I don't. If I scope I would have to choose scope a Leupold 4x to 16 power standard reticle would be it, simple effective resonable cost.
