    Grendel First Blood

Second week of gun season here in Oklahoma and we finally got a cold front. It brought about a 1/2" of ice, so it was a little tough getting into the stand.

(that picture was right side up when I posted it)

However, that solid layer of ice did block the wind pretty well.

The first group finally came out, working down the tree line and we couldn't get lined up on them before they ducked into the trees. Tonight was Bedlam football (Oklahoma vs Oklahoma State), so we packed up to head in for the game. At that time about a half dozen deer came back out into the open.

20" Shilen barrel at about 100 yds. Impact was maybe a couple inches forward of where I wanted and she ran about a hundred yards to the trees and laid down and died about 10 yds in.

Sorry for the picture quality, it was cold and dark and we had places to go.

By the way, Sooners won and should be headed to the National Championship playoff!!! Pretty good day all around.

Looks slippery! If you have some spare chicken wire lying around, nailing it to the platform can improve traction (allthough the ice looked like it would just have "sunk" the wire.)

Yup. Plenty of lung damage. One small contusion on the heart, probably from a fragment.

Good idea on the chicken wire, but in this case, cattle panels wouldn't have helped. We had more than 24 hrs of light rain with the temp at 30 to 32 degrees. Roads didn't get bad, but everything is covered with ice.

Hornady 123 gr SST, handloaded over Benchmark. I got her skinned and cleaned the rest of the way. Entrance wound looks to be in just about the exact right place. There's about 1-1/2" of rib missing there. On the other side, there's another chunk of rib broken out, but I don't see an actual exit. However, the upper arm bone (that connects to the shoulder blade) is busted up with a quarter size exit wound.

I found a little piece of lead and a little piece of jacket in that mess.

                    Thanks.

Yes I did. That's where the heater was.

I read this again and realized what you were really asking. Yes we had things gathered up and had started closing up the windows when we saw the deer start moving again.

It is often that an unexpected sighting ends with a missed shot as many start relaxing and stop "hunting" when they are about to leave for home. Good to see you get one under those circumstances.

Thanks all. That's the way it is Von Gruff. Several years ago on the first lease we got to hunt in this area, I once told my daughter "We need to start parking by the blind and set up by the gate!".
