Berger Boar Ballistic Blowout - 1st Field Test of Berger 130 gr VLD-Hunting

    Here is the video... https://youtu.be/9-guybTjxuI

I am testing out some new Berger VLD-Hunting 130 gr. Grendel ammo. I must admit to being a little surprised to walk up on my downed boar only to find him still alive some 10 minutes after shooting him despite what I thought should have been an immediately lethal shot. Butchery revealed the extent of the damage, massive. The Berger round entered behind the ear and exited the other side. The exit wound was large, larger than I normally get with Hornady SST ammo. Cutting back the skin revealed a cavernous amount of destruction.

The ammo performed as designed. I just can't figure out why the hog wasn't dead, LOL.

Just one of those freak shots where no major artery was hit?

Aside from the spray of the shot, there was some drainage, but the real blood didn't start coming out of the hog until I shot it in the forehead with my pistol. So to answer your question, it did NOT appear that a major artery (or vein) was hit, at least not significantly.

May be a freak shot, but it is what it is.

That's crazy it was still breathing, especially with the fist-sized hole.

Crazy. I would say that the bullet was fine, you just found another "zombie hog" that just wouldn't die!

True that, but it was unpleasant to see that a hog that should have been dead by all accounts was still very much conscious of what was going on around it some 10 minutes after being shot.

I will try the ammo on a couple more hogs, shooting in different spots. I can't say that I have ever called my shot before, or that I have ever intentionally NOT shot what I thought was the best target, but the nature of testing means things are not always what the analyst thinks is best. I have a couple more hunts coming up and we'll see what happens.

Kinda reminds me of some fine words of wisdom from one of my marksmanship instructors in the Corps...." You don't shoot him until you think he's dead. You shoot him until HE thinks he's dead".

Following that logic would cost a lot of ammo when it comes to hogs. Hogs will often flinch and spasm for 30-60 seconds after being killed, and sometimes for several minutes. You could expend a lot of ammo trying to convince a dead hog that he is dead.

I would feel really bad about that too.....hopefully it was just a fluke.

Great video and shooting D 00. I like you hate to see any animal suffer, even wild pigs. Happens to the best of us tho.

great video and interesting initial results Double Naught. Are you going to attempt a center shoulder shot at any point? My dad just purchased some of Precision's 100gr Barnes TAC-TX rounds (2700fps). They should be some humdingers. I'm still eager to hear / see more of your thoughts on the VLD bullet.

excellent shot and bullet performance with a massive exit. you both did your parts especially well. just one of those zombie things that gets messy sometimes.

I'll be out Friday night and maybe get another change and see what happens. I have about 75 more rounds of this stuff to play with.
