Black bear taken with my brand new Grendel

Let me start off by saying thanks, thanks to everyone in this forum that posts their experiences and knowledge so people like myself can read it and make stuff like this possible.

Now to the story. We first spotted this bear about 1000yds away, we watched him for a bit and saw he was wandering uphill. So we took our time getting over to where we think he might pop up to the top of the ridge, stopping a few times to glass other areas. Finally we make our way to the top of his ridge and spot him about 250yds away. I hand my Grendel to my cousin(he had the tag) and we start sneaking towards it. We get to 130yds and set up. He's facing away from us so we wait until he turns enough to access a shoulder. After a minute he gives us a good angle and one shot was fired.

Shot was 130yds, he dropped like a rock and laid still for 30 seconds. Then his back legs started scooting the rest of him away so he took another bullet and that did it. My cousin had the tag so he made the kill.

This is the entrance side, it went through and broke the left shoulder before entering the rib cage, there was no exit or recovered bullet.

This bear weighed 275lbs all gutted out and was 6'1" nose to tail.

My cousin said he found 2 bullet holes when they skinned him, one through the shoulder and one in the spine above the shoulder. We're not 100% sure which one was first.

Ammo was 123gr SST, factory load going 2533 at the muzzle from this rifle.

This rifle was finished about 16 hours before it made this kill.

Wow! Not what I'd expect to see killed with a Grendel. Congratulations!

Wow that 6.5 123 grain SST made a couple of pretty big holes. Thanks for posting, great pictures, memories for a life time!

Major congrats to you and your kin. What a great day.

How likely are you to use 6.5 Grendel now for most of, if not all of your hunting?

That's a good question, it will pretty much come along on every hunt I do now, still up in the air on elk though. I mainly archery hunt for elk and deer but moved to rifle for deer so I can use this Grendel, I'll continue to allow my cousin to use the rifle if he wants, and my girlfriend will use it for deer this fall. I shoot a dozen or more coyotes through the year and hope to get one with the Grendel pretty soon.

Suppose it's the first black bear kill on the forum?

Congrats on a very good bear. I would bet the spine shot was the second shot since you said he was using his back legs to scoot along after the first shot.

I just texted my cousin that as well, it makes sense that the shoulder was broken first. Then the spine shot anchored him.
