Yesterday, the Pennsylvania Game Commission unanimously passed the proposed rulemaking for the semi-auto rifle hunting law at the quarterly meeting. Final approval for the regulations will take place at theMarch 27-28 meeting. Signed by Governor Tom Wolf on November 21, 2016, Act 168 of 2016 eliminates the prohibition on the use of semi-automatic rifles for hunting and allows for the Pennsylvania Game Commission to regulate these sporting rifles for all game species in accordance with season and bag limits.

The Commissioners also expanded the use of semi-automatic rifle hunting to now include fall turkey season in addition to small game and varmints, bear, elk and deer.

Semi-automatic and air- and gas-powered rifles will be permitted in the hunting of small game for the 2017-2018 hunting season.

The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners unanimously approved the measure after a last-minute amendment to exclude the use of those firearms in hunting large game like deer, elk, bear and turkey. The commissioners' initial proposal, which received preliminary approval in January, would have allowed the use of semi-automatic firearms to hunt big game as well as small game.

The Fudds or entrenched Gaming Commissioners won out on this one. Some people just have an inherently bad attitude towards their countrymen, and figure people can't be trusted with any kind or real freedom.

Its not that. The reason is most PA hunters are against anything that they believe will help other hunters kill more of "their deer". Can't tell you how many times I have heard "give the deer a chance" in regards to legalizing semi auto's. Its like half of them believe that someone carrying a SA has a much greater chance of success. Same thing when they passed crossbows. It wasn't just the bow hunters that were against it. The rifle hunters were just as pissed. Then when they became legal lots of bow hunters and rifle hunters started using them.
