Has anyone had any luck with 100 gr amax and 8208? I'm looking to work up a load for an 18 inch barrel and have 8lbs of 8208.
8208 and 100 gr amax?

The way I look at it, the 100gr amax is close to the same b.c as the 168 SMK that is typically pushed to 2650-2700 out of a 24 "308 win to 800 yards with success, going around the same velocity with a 16-18" Grendel barrel. Should perform quite well out to appropriate ranges.

Hit % gets close to single digits at 900 and it's clearly tumbling by then. But then again, there are those melting Amax tips
My 308 with the 175 load and my 16" Grendel are very similar with drop.. both go very well out to 810 yards at my elevation (660 asl).. but at 900 on a 12" challenge target in varying winds things can get frustrating really quick.. it's at this point the 260 comes out of the basement lol..Last edited by Kilco; 06-23-2017, 01:34 AM.

It is a bit fast - it is a 20". I'm using 45.5 grains with a br2 in a Lapua case. A lot of good it does me - the velocity is probably making it destabilize faster - lol. Couldn't get 175 SMKs and Varget to work but been playing with 175 RDFs I picked up cheap at Monmouth Reloading. Found the node - 44.2 grains going 2660, but can't get much better than MOA since an OAL of 2.865" is the longest I can get in my mag and I'm 0.09" off the lands! Tonight's project is loading them long at 2.935" in 0.1s around 44.2 for, single loading. My goal this summer is to wear out the barrel so I can replace it with 260/6.5C 26er when I do the AR10Let's go Brandon!

IMR 4064 and ar-comp are some of my other favorite 175gr 308 powders. CFE223 and Power pro 2000 have stupid velocity, but I never found consistent accuracy.
I had to load the 175 TMK to 2.950 to get them to shoot in my 308... single loadloading wasn't my goal for that rifle though..
Hard to dispute the cream-horn in a auto-loader (I'm a big 6mm CM fan myseld).. but for a bolt gun I LOVE my 260's.. probably my favorite bolt gun cartridge. Took a bull moose black bear, and 246 pound whitetail at 450 yards with my 260 last fall pushing the 143 eld-x 2780 with my 260. Brass never seems to grow, always shoots consistant, and that rifle is where my Nightforce SHV F1 found it's home..

8208 XBR and 100gr in the Grendel are a very good match for each other. Pressures are lower but speeds are as high as a lot of other powders that will hit max, whereas I have yet to see a load with 8208 where you can get enough in the case to reach max pressure under a 100gr.
You definitely will hit max pressure with 120 and 123gr once you start getting around or past 28.5gr.
It's a really good combo with the 107gr SMK for target work.
Under a 100gr NBT, my 16" will even hit 2700fps if I compress the load.NRA Basic, Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, RSO

With the 100NBT I measure 2,831fps from an eight-shot string using a 19" barrel, with 30gns of 8208. Was doubting it at the time and thought maybe the Chrony was slightly bent or something. But, when compared against 52's I am more confident.
When not shooting for distance I like the bullets to be as fast and flat as possible. It is both forgiving of range estimation and aids bullet expansion. Much of this site is dedicated to what travels supersonic the furthest and I get that, yet most of our shooting will be at much closer ranges.
For example, using the same 19" barrel;
120NBT drops below 2,000fps at 250yds, but goes subsonic at 950yds (using 2,480 fps MV). The drop at 200 is 0.6Mils whereas
100NBT drops below 2,000fps at 325yds but goes subsonic at 850yds (using 2,830fps MV). The drop at 200 is 0.4MIls
Compared to the weight range of the .223, 100gns is still a decent weight bullet. Depends what you are shooting of course and how often you expect to shoot the maximum possible range.

Back in my high power days 175 grainers sitting on top of Varget worked really well out of both my Remington 40XBR and the M1A. It has been about 20 years and I forget the load. Who knows Varget may have changed in the 20 years as wellQueen of Battle

Varget is too bulky for 6.5 Grendel in most cases.NRA Basic, Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, RSO
