i'm old (66) but new to the AR platform. my eldest son built me a very nice 5.56 carbine last year, and a 6.5 grendel rifle upper for my birthday recently. finally got to shoot the grendel yesterday. it has much promise. i'll add some details where appropriate later on.

Sounds like a damn fine son you got there.Knowing everthing isnt as important as knowing where to find it.

Welcome from Texas! I built 'em for my grandsons. Now I wish that I could see / shoot as well as they do! And, it took me a long time to cotton up to the AR platform, was convinced it was just another passing fad ( remember the Edsel? ) but when the bug bit, got a near terminal case of it. You will enjoy both this forum and the Grendel.

here is what my son built me: the lower is the one for the 5.56 carbine he built me: spike's lower, daniel defense furniture, ALG Defense trigger, troy ambi bolt release. the grendel upper is LBE, 20-inch medium contour blem barrel (i don't know brand) with spike's 9-hole brake/hider, spike's type 1 grendel BCG with alexander arms grendel extractor, UTG forearm. i added nikon p-3 rings, and the leupold vx-1 3x9x40 my son gave me. weight about 8.6 pounds. that barrel is HEAVY.

Look into a Mlok bi-pod stud. This one is for Key-mod, but you'll get the idea. Not expensive, and makes for a very nice mounting point. 6-9 inch bi-pod sits perfectly level on the grip.

Well Paul Foreman, some of us on this website are older than you. I resisted the black rifle for a long time, but now it is my go to rifle of choice. The M21 Springfield, M24, and other rifles just stay in the safe.
Your son really did you a favor sorta, but you may find the AR platform addictive.
