Howa mini action factory load test- results

    Hey everyone!

Been out shooting quite a bit and one of the projects I wanted to complete was testing various factory loads. I thought I would share my results.
Group sizes posted are the "best" of the bunch. multiple groups fired and all were very consistent in their sizes. velocities are a 5 round sample taken on the same day, using a magnetospeed v3.

Great info! I have found the lot of Hornady Black I purchased ran much slower than my old batch of match 123 amax ammo out of my 16" barrel.. I first shot it with "black" and was seeing 2350 fps... I was worried until I tried the older amax match and was seeing 2440-2460.

Look at that group with Wolf steel case! Was that typical Matt? I understand that's the best group but were the others close? The AA ammo did very well.

Thanks a bunch for posting this Matt. Last week some new shooters loved blowing up 2.5 liter soft drinks from 200-275 yards last week with Wolf out of my Howa.

I had some Hornady ELD if the Wolf was too squirrely, but that wasn't the case.

Is the wolf ammo not potentially hard on the howa? I can't bring myself to shoot it through my howa but love the idea of some cheap plinking ammo for it.

I would say that this wolf ammo would be hard on any barrel

Lucky gunner did a study on steel jacked ammo. It wore out the barrels slightly faster than copper jacketed, but you still saved money over the long run, being on an AR platform, it was cheaper to shoot wolf and change your barrel every ten thousand rounds than shoot copper jacketed stuff. No idea what a Howa barrel would cost you.

Thanks for the replies and that was my thought process. My 20 HB shoots very well with factory ammo so I'm not going to put any wolf down it.

Have you reloaded anything for it yet? Say in the 90gr to 120gr range

For the sake of conversation, I'd like to keep this to factory loads only.

No problem on keeping it factory loads. I too have the same mini Howa in 6.5 Grendel. I've only shot factory Honady Black 123gr and Hornady 123gr SST through mine. Everything else has been reloads. The Hornady Black 123 out preformed the Hornady SST 123gr by far in my rifle.

Matt, have you found any differentiation of group sizes when the Magneto-thing is or is not on the barrel? Just curious.
