    Hunting Bullet for 20" Build

Looking to develops a new long range load for my 20" Grendel. I'm thinking 100g Barnes TTSX. Small & fast but the BC is not as good as the as the 120g. So my question is where's the trade off between small & fast or bigger but slower?

The situation that comes to mind is a big Wisconsin buck comes out at 450 yards. Your sitting there with a 20" Grendel. What bullet would you like to have loaded up?

129gr ABLR for that range and elevation in WI.

100gr TTSX seems to stop expanding the petals at 2000fps, and you hit 2000fps somewhere between 325-350yds even if you launch it at 2800fps from the 20".

With a 120gr TSX at 2550fps, you won't have expansion past 250yds at that elevation.

Where we hunt elk up here in the Rockies and Uintahs, with the same mv, I would get 425yds of expansion, almost twice the effective range at sea level.

With the 129gr ABLR at sea level, 59˚ you have:
450yds 1808fps impact speed 726ft-lbs, 1 mil of drift (10mph full value wind)

At a nice December winter 20˚ day in WI with the same load:
    450yds 1759fps impact speed 687ft-lbs, 1.1 mils drift

129gr ABLR expands down to 1300fps.

If I was expecting a big WI buck past 200 yards, I wouldn't tote a Grendel. Bullet construction won't be as big a deal that far out. You'll want a soft bullet for deer in general and for distance especially.

I will just leave this here

I saw this buck once during archery season and wasn't able to get closer than 100 yds sneak style. I'm not one to sit around waiting for an opportunity in a tree stand, I'd rather create my own. He was just a 3x4 but his mass and height/width were unlike any of the other bucks I'd seen this year. I put the sneak on him but he

Just keep in mind Montana is higher elevation than Wisconsin.

If you don't have lead restrictions just stick with the 123 eld or sst.
