Massive Tissue Damage on Coyote, Hornady SST

    20170814_230317.jpg

I thought this was interesting as I usually don't get this sort of result from SST on Coyotes. Usually, the exit wounds I see are quarter to golfball-sized, and rarely larger to may racquetball-sized, but this was huge!

I shot this young female coyote at just over 80 yards, the shot entering the left shoulder and exiting out of the front of the neck. The wound is huge (larger than a baseball). The trajectory of the bullet had it hitting shoulder blade, rib(s), and spine. The distance from entry to exit is about 6" and that would put it the exit at about the point of maximum temporary stretch cavity, but somehow the conditions were just exactly right and it became permanent.

Sorry, but no video. I think the switch on my recorder is dying.

I had the same experience only in a 22-250 using a 52 AMax. I think hitting it just right and exiting out the chest cavity at speed makes a massive blow out. Mine wasn't quite as big but not by much and I was as surprised as you. Needless to say, mine was DRT, didn't take another step or even twitch. But if you hit it head on in the chest, you are hard pressed to find the hole.

Yeah, they don't go too far after wounds like that. They are pretty much, dead right there.

            Wow now that is impressive!!

I've seen similar carnage performed by the 95gr SST from my .243 Win.

Wasn't the extra expansion due to hitting bone?

I have learned to expect the 123 sst to be fairly predictable in most cases. I like it. It does lose a bit of mass in some cases and sheds jackets. But it works. I like my game to take the dirt nap quickly. I can't say I get better results with any other bullet in the grendel. I do get similar wounds with the btips and pro hunters, considering terminal effects. I do shoot mono bullets as well. The factory sst is a great load for the people that don't reload.
Yard work is not an excuse!
