I coloured the neck of one case from each group with a sharpie.
I hope you can see the results in the photos. It is very obvious.

I ended up full length sizing one case as I used to do just to see....

From now on, for my Howa Mini action BOLT gun, I will back off my Forster FL sizing die one turn.
Sizing of the die and 2/3 of the neck is perfect as in the photos.

One again great thread, thanks. I'll hold off buying a neck sizing die and see how this works out.....
I will be interested to see your shooting results. I reduced the size of groups in my 16" striped BCA barrel from 1.2 MOA to .9 MOA by resizing about 2/3 of the neck, maybe a bit more.

I will strip down a bolt and play around with it when I get more time. I've been busy since the hurricane hit. Is the group bolt buy closed already?

I've just sent all my brass off to be annealed. Some here say no need with the grendel but I was sending my Creedmoor anyway.....
When I get it back I will load up 5 of each with the same powder, primer and bullet and give it a go....
And post the results.

I annealed 357 Herett in the past. It is pretty easy. Get a propane torch and a bucket of water. Pick up each case and twirl the neck in the flame until just red hot and drop in the bucket of water. Holding the case by the base prevents overheating unless you have asbestos fingers.

You Don't want the case necks over 750 for more than a few seconds, when they turn red you have gone too far. Dropping them in water only insures that the heat doesn't travel.

MC,
You may be right. It's been 20 years since I did this. I may have done this under low light conditions so I said just red, not fully red. I do know it was impossible to hold for very long, which is the point of holding it in your fingers. Each piece only takes a few seconds.

One of the reasons that I like to pin tumble is that it gets the inside of the case necks clean enough inside, to have Tempilac 750 stick without an insulating layer of carbon. (you paint it on the inside of the case neck). That is the only practical, for me anyway, way to tell when it's done. Having a little tool to spin the case with a battery drill helps a lot. There is a lot to know to get it just right, not too much, not too little. When done right, cases last a lot longer and accuracy is enhanced.

Finally got round to actually shooting this test, glad that I did, made a huge difference as you can see by the photo!
Shot 4 groups of 5 shots.

They measured as followed :

+ 1/3 turn into the shell holder 1.4"

On the shell holder. 0.5"

- 1.0 turn off the shell holder. 0.7"

-2.0 turns off the shell holder. 0.5"

Not sure I can improve on these but will shoot out to 200 and 300 yds next.

Glad to see you got such great results with this partial resizing technique.

I think I read about this first in the Lee reloading handbook about 30 years ago. Just another tool in the search for better precision.

Is that the heavy barrel HOWA mini or a lighter weight barrel?

It is the heavy barrel....

There is a deal right now on Brownells.
Heavy barreled action. $399.99

That is a good deal. Should be free shipping...
No one else sells these.

That photo is not current. I now have a Magpul Gen 2 PRS stock. The cheek piece on that other stock was too short...

This is more of what I had in mind. Yours looks exceptional but I would like a traditional looking Grendel.
