107 SMK with H335 and 8208, eld-m factory ammo chrono data

I ran a bunch of 5 round groups through the chrono over the weekend.

Barrel: John Benjamin 18" fluted with .264 LBC chamber (uses 7.62X39 bolt)
    Elevation was 2700'
    Temp was 58 deg
    Hornady 2x fired brass
    Sierra 107 SMK
    2.260 COL
    No crimp
Cases were sized using the rcbs 16407 Small base die

H335 (5 shots of each charge)
charge High Low Ave ES SD
    27.3 2407 2366 2390 41 14
    27.6 2443 2383 2417 60 20
    27.9 2462 2427 2450 35 12
    28.2 2511 2466 2492 45 15
28.5 No data (chrony was not ready)
    28.8 2576 2543 2559 33 14
    29.1 2609 2578 2596 31 12
    29.4 2629 2607 2615 22 8
    29.7 2640 2630 2636 10 3
    30.0 2672 2647 2658 25 8

Accuracy was good from 29.1 up to 30 with the H335. No pressure signs. I will get more granular in the 29.7 range and go a little above the 30g published load.

8208 (5 shots with each charge)
charge High Low Ave ES SD
    28.6 2518 2488 2503 30 12
    28.9 2549 2528 2538 21 9
    29.2 2586 2545 2562 41 14 Slightly compressed
    29.5 2609 2569 2586 40 14 Compressed
29.8 2636 2601 2620 35 11 Very compressed, seating die puts light ring around nose of bullet

Starting with 29.2 I settled the powder in the brass before seating. COL did not grow overnight on any of the compressed loads.
Best accuracy was with 29.8. This was the best group of the day.

I also bought 2 boxes of Hornady 123g ELD-M ammo. Here is the chrono data for 5 rounds:

    H: 2395 L: 2385 Ave: 2388 ES: 12 SD 4

The accuracy of the ELD-M factory ammo was not impressive in my rifle but I want to re-test on a more stable shooting platform. I'll bring my sand bags with me next time.

    Good report.

Im working up loads for the 108 Scenar atm. I'll give H335 a try as well. On a side note.. damn these things are loooonnnggg. 108 Scenar is longer than the 123 eld-m.

I am finally getting to try out some of these bullets. any idea where to start with CFE223? or is there a good reason to dismiss that powder altogether?

I wouldn't dismiss it, but most reports seem to claim that it is a bit too slow for the 100, 107, 108 cup and core bullets..

Although someone on here had great success with it using the 100gr TTSX.

I plan on trying it with the 110gr Controlled Chaos bullet.

OK, what has been you COAL for these bullits? I am thinking about trying a vihtavouri N133 and or N530 powder with them. I see that there is load data for Lapua 100 grain and 108 grain scenar bullets and am trying to see if that's a good approximate powder start load area to work with.

107 SMK and 108 Lapua we load to 2.250, seems to work fine. The Nosler 100gr BT and Hornady 100gr ELD-M I load to 2.225 since they will jam the lands if loaded much longer.

When I get home I'll look in the Grendel Handbooks for some starting charges.. I'm telling ya those books are pretty damn handy when playing with new bullets and loads... LOTS of data in there.

thanks for the help, and I have those manuals but have misplaced them right now. I also subscribe to loaddata.com but cannot find anything with those same components. I want to use the vihtavouri powders though just for comparison to the usual.

I use CFE223 with Hornady 100gr AMAX and 95gr VMAX with very good results.

IMR 8208 XBR has been real good for me with 100 G. TTSX bullets.....105 Cavity Back Bullets also.

I had the chance to shoot the 107 SMK's out past 1K this weekend. Same rifle as in my original post. Altitude was around 2800ft. Almost no wind. The load was 29.8g of 8208 loaded to 2.265" OAL. Scope was a Nikon Black X1000 4-16X50 with mrad reticle in a nikon black 20moa mount.

                    Range / Mils
                    300 1.2
                    400 2.2
                    500 3.0
                    600 4.5
                    700 5.4
                    900 9.5
                    1350 21.4

I was happy I could get out that far with an 18" barrel. While I was not ringing the steel on every shot I could easily see the bullet impacts in the dirt and they were always right around the target. The plate at 1360 was 17" X 17". Even my son was able to hit it with the 18" grendel.

I shot 123g sst's at the 900 yard target and loaded with 31g of cfe223 I needed 13.4 mils to get on target.

                      Appreciate the report.

Hey. Is that a typo or did you really load to 2.650”?

I like it. It was hazy because of smoke in the area I was at so not even the NF scopes I looked through were clear. It returned to zero well and tracked back up fine. The focus and zoom knobs were what I would consider smooth and stiff enough that they wont move when bumped but not hard to turn. Clicks were nice and crisp. My only gripe was that when I zeroed my scope and lifted and rotated the turrets to zero they no longer perfectly lined up with the marks. Its just a bit off. If I was 2 clicks more or less on my zero they would line up. I may contact them and see what they say.
