tim...- Welcome to the Clan, from the Great Nation of Texas! This is the best place to ask questions, we all did in the beginning - and then we learned a lot! Tell us where you are and what you have on your grocery list.

@ just_john I'm in the socialist republic of Washington for now but I'm planning to head down to Texas. I'm planning to use the 6.5 for varmint to medium sized game and target shooting (pigs when I get to texas) I have a lower with an ssa-e just sitting around collecting dust so I really need a new upper and thought an 18-20 inch grendel would be just right. plus I can share bullets with my 260 when reloading. I really wanted a 6xc or 6.5xc but it would be more trouble than it's worth in an ar. I'm not sure if I'm going to put one together or just buy a complete. I know it would be cheaper to buy a complete but it's fun to tinker.

tim300wsm - when do you plan to escape from the left coast and, what part of Texas are you aiming for? Glad to have you. Unless you have a reasonable understanding of how boom things work, I usually encourage folks to start with a "ready-made" so that they can slowly wander thru the various component systems and come to an understanding of what that "thing" is, why it is there and how it works. And, there isn't "why isn't this workign" moment with no knowledge base to work from. But, I would never discourage someone from just "jumping in there" and roll a fresh one. The AR platform is an incredible foundation and the Grendel is an awesome round. The combination is definitely a marriage made in heaven!

I am looking at the Conroe area and hopefully within 18 months. I agree that you should understand how things work before you build them. I have built a couple of bolt guns from actions and have a mill Wright and machining background. it would be my first ground up AR but not my first firearm. I have never reloaded for an AR before so any help I can get from you guys in that area would be huge.

              Welcome.
It is funny how when you mate an upper to a lower it results in another upper. Then maybe another lower.

ARs are like Legos for adults.
