    2 Long Nights With Hogs

Saturday, my wife gave the go ahead for our daughter to start ground hunting with me and my buddy Dave provided several places for us to hunt while he and I switched places through the night between providing instruction and being the back-up shooter to my daughter. She's a fine shot from the stand or the bench, but stalking hogs and calling coyotes and then trying to shoot them off sticks was something very new for her. She did not shoot as well as she would have liked, but she learned a lot and had a great time (same for me, LOL). She overshoot the first coyote of the evening. It seems that calling it in and having it get so close was "awfully exciting" for her, maybe a bit too exciting!

On Monday, I took my buddy, Ben, out with me. He actually took off work in order to come hunt. Most of our night was at a high fence ranch where hogs have invaded and are unwanted. I have hunted with him on numerous occasions and this just wasn't his night. It went wrong on the first hog he went after and continued down hill from there. He stalked 1/3 the way to a hog that was in heavy brush and then worked for several minutes to try to get an angle to shoot the hog. When he finally did, his 6.5 Creedmore 140 gr. Hornady SST struck an unseen branch that was laying on the ground with part stuck up in the air. A 3" thick section of the rotting branch actually stopped the bullet. Ben is supposed to do a follow analysis, but suffice to say that I gave him all sorts of grief over this freak event. The branch was so rotted that we snapped it in half against the ground and the peeled out sections of wood with our fingers and a tiny pair of wire snips that we had handy. Ben used to be a regular Grendel shooter and I tried to remind him how a Grendel round would have exploded the branch, killed the hog, passed through and dug a 6" deep 3' long furrow in the ground...if only he had used a Grendel. He managed to give me some well deserved grief as well.

Regardless of whatever issues we encountered, it was still a good time hunting and we did manage to definitely remove 2 more hogs from the property, possibly 3.

Was one of the rifles really suppressed? I saw it said that but I thought it sounded too loud.

Yep, both are suppressed, same suppressor, in fact. How the recorder picks up the sound varies.
