Howa HB with 8208 and 123 AMAX

I ran some loads over my Crony today using IMR 8208 XBR powder and 123gr.AMAX bullets with Rem 7.5 primers and a COL of 2.270" Temperature -5 C or about 27F
    grains velocity fps average ES
    27.3 2423,2442,2441 2425 31
    27.6 2467,2465,2461 2464 6
    27.9 2460,2469,2502 2477 42
    28.2 2507,2515,2528 2516 21
    28.5 2540,2550,2529 2539 21
    28.8 2574,2553,2576,2564 2566 23 4 shot string,everything seemed good to go so I loaded some more
    29.1 2595,2603,2595 2597 8
    29.4 2629,2628,2624 2627 5
All the above loads were safe in my gun with no problems lifting the bolt or extraction. The primers are good too.I can't tell any difference in just looking at the brass.
I don't see a maximum of 29.5 grs. a problem.A gain of 200 fps is plenty.Accuracy was very good at 27.6 grs. then mediocre and then started to tighten up near maximum with the last load 2 bullets touching then one aside a bit.All my shots at 200 yds.
I really like this powder,to me I don't see much difference in the way it builds pressure compared to CFE 223. In my bolt action and accuracy is better.

Good info. Thanks! Barrel length? Any loads compressed?

20" barrel and the heavier loads are compressed a bit.
I will load some more for accuracy testing.

Nice. I tried 8208 in my HB Howa awhile back, but only took it up to 28.0 on that first go-round. My one-shot string falls right in line with your velocities. Looks like I could probably keep working up.

If it's helpful to you at all, I went up to 29.5 grains of AR Comp at 2624, 2619, 2619, 2614, and 2614 fps. Those were pretty compressed at 2.330" and not spectacularly accurate, though, which is why I was going to venture to other powders. I ran TAC up to 28.5 grains for a measly 2402 fps on the same day I tried 8208, so it's probably out of the running.

        Thanks for posting.

I can see we are in the same ballpark velocity wise.

Thanks for sharing this data. I loaded up to 28.5 (as per book max) and ended up with basically the same progression of speeds, but slightly slower, and the same accuracy nodes. I was planning to try some more loads as I had no pressure signs, and wouldn't mind getting to 2600fps for the purpose I want this rifle. So this is great for me to progress with confidence. Again, thanks for the share. Will post my results when I get to the range and run some loads through the chrony...

It is fantastic that we can learn from others experiences and testing results here.

I think 8208 xbr is the golden ticket for the howa mini 6.5 Grendel . I've tried cfe223 , h335 with no luck . My Lilja ar15 love it too . It's like the h4350 of Grendel's. Just hope it doesn't get rare as hens teeth like h4350.
