    Another thing to look at for the OP is the mention of shooting suppressed.

    Most 18" barrels have MLGS, which is really hard on the bolt in the AR15 when suppressed, including 5.56 guns.

    RLGS with less plug dwell time will help alleviate early unlocking and shear forces on the lugs.

    A flow-through suppressor can more or less eliminate these problems, but most cans aren't flow-through.

    As far as velocities go, you can hand load 18" to break 2500fps, but you will have less room for accuracy nodes compared to a 20".

    My mild hand load of CFE223 / 123gr AMAX averaged 2519fps with my LaRue Stealth 2.0 rifle.
